Who finds the Speedmaster difficult to wind?
Does anyone else find the Speedy a little difficult to wind? The crown is so recessed into the case it’s difficult to get a purchase on and slippy too. Have to pinch so hard it’s a pain on the fingers. It’s also not easy to tell if the crown is turning or not without holding it next to the ear.
It’s a great watch but a pain to wind. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I agree but it’s my youngest son’s problem now.

Agreed 100%! I’ve never had a speedy pro (I’ve had many variants) that I found to wind easily.

I’ll grant you, it is a pain but I do know if the crown is turning without holding it to my ears. Since I usually have a cloth around my watches I sometimes get a purchase on the crown with the cloth. I’m new to speedy’s too so I guess it takes some getting used to. I love the precision tick of the 1861, sounds great. Biggest problem for me is telling if I’ve wound it enough at first I was only getting about 24 hrs of power and thought I had a duff movement but realised I had to wind it more.

I dislike winding it as it feels like a chore.

Usually I don’t have any issues winding but there are mornings were my fingers are slippery and then becomes not so easy.
All in all I’m ok winding:) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I usually wind my speedy with the caseback up. I find that way easier.

I love winding mine. It’s actually a small pleasure in the mornings.

It's a thumb shredder.
Wear it more often and build up those callouses.

Some are extraordinarily difficult, and others aren't too bad. The one I have now has a crown that turns with very little resistance, so with reasonably good technique it proves reasonably easy to wind; a different one I owned a few years ago was a real pain because of undue resistance in the crown (seals, maybe?). I sold that watch, and the difficulty winding it was one of the factors.

Hmm I find it pretty easy, but I’m doing it differently from my other manual wind FPJ. With the Journe I pinch the crown between the index finger and thumb and roll it. With the Speedy, my thumb is over the edge of the crystal and bezel, and I use the side of my index finger near the joint to wind, almost dragging across it. This way it winds quickly and easily.

I use my 8 day Panerai to build up strength.

It is absolutely a PITA to wind. One of the reasons I changed over to a Speedmaster with automatic movement.

Someone told me the trick is to use the side and length of your index finger to roll the crown instead of using thumb and finger.

You want to try the 3861 if you want a properly difficult watch to wind. For the first month it really hurt my fingers!
I’ve never had an issue with the 1861, but the straight lugged ones are a lot easier minus the crown guards. I don’t mind the winding but appreciate an auto as I forget sometimes |

Btw, when they look this good, it’s worth the effort.

It does shred my thumb, especially in the winter when my skin is dry.

I'm about to turn 8, so I struggle a bit with it. I guess when I hit puberty it shouldn't be a problem.

I enjoy it. It just part of owning one of the great watches ever made.
