I hope you are right, but I cant shake the feeling Rolex has been able to accomplish the DSC depths for at least a decade or more, & this was simply a publicity stunt...

Of course publicity, the so-good-we-did-it-again/no one else has done it(AKA the 'halo effect' as previously mentioned) is a part of it and to be fair why on earth if you had done it before allow another company to get in their and steal some of your shine. Do you honestly think Omega would just sit back if NASA announced a trip back to the moon?? And i'd bet my last penny that if a Mars landing happens in my lifetime they (Omega) will be front of the queue to say 'Me First'.

I believe it was only National Geographic and Rolex (no, Virgin did not contribute)

here is the banner from the top of the website
and the sponsors and contributors banner from the bottom of the website

There would obviously also be a very tight commercial arrangement between James Cameron and National Geographic for the rights (and profits!) to the footage.

I am proud to be a National Geographic member and subscriber if this is what they do with my money

I think this link is worth posting to this thread for reference. Details on the 1960 Trieste dive: http://bjsonline.com/watches/articles/0022_3.shtml

Note there are pages at the bottom. Here's a look at the innards of the Rolex watch that made the dive: http://bjsonline.com/watches/articles/0022_4.shtml

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_04kZGR_ltm...EEP-SEA-Ad.jpg One last post of a Rolex ad I haven't seen heralding the accomplishment. Note they didn't accurately measure the depth at time.

VERY COOL! I got the booklet from an AD in Vegas, heard there is a limited run of 500 soon and put my name on the list. I usually wear a DSSD 10 months out of the year and on the bottom of the Bering for sometimes 70 hours a week. I get this monster I guarantee I'm wearing on the bottom of the Bering Sea :D :D

member #104,893 I've been gone about 2 to 4 years, there's not much about this on the net. nice meeting you

Yeah Mike, Way too many irons in the fire (OR ICE) I can't keep up with everything and TRF kinda took a backseat when Redshirt, Ashley, Leo and others left and we lost JJ. with 100,000+ members it just didn't feel the same. Thanks, headed back to Nome in two days, the sea ice is rotting, time to get back to blowing bubbles and sucking gold :D

I wonder if platinum could withstand the pressure at that rated depth without imploding or at least serious deformation?

Yeah it has changed quite a bit. Any chance of some pictures of gold on the seabed?

Clearly the best for styling in Mariana. Very great accomplishment; the watch wasn't bad either.

I couldn't afford the watch even if it did come out. I'm just waiting to see if I can get a base ball cap celebrating the event.

IMHO: That prototype in the article doesn't look like a watch that will sell well to the general public. Professional divers, oceanographer, underwater welder, Navy Seal, etc. maybe.
