A good read today from Dink about this release.

While the author didn't go full throttle on some of the viewpoints in the second half of the article, I thought this quote eloquently encapsulated the sentiment from this community:

"My initial reaction was that this release wreaked of corporate anxiety. A panic-we-must-stay-relevant type of situation."

It’s an embarrassment. No idea what they were thinking.

Thanks for sharing this article. It was a bit of a roller coaster read (she likes the watch, she likes it not), but it highlighted a number of points and considerations that make me view this action by AP in a different light…with a number of cast shadows depending on the perspective I am viewing from. Note that some of the reader comments at end of article were great too. From a purely bottom line business perspective, I can appreciate the brash ‘genius’ of FHB in making this move, especially considering the amount of game theory strategy I imagine went into this. FHB says they don’t react in weeks, they react in years. So, I’ll agree there will be ripple and trickle down effects of this play. Heck, look how much this release lit up TRF! So, I have to tip my hat to this brand/business play, which I know many would disagree.
In contrast, from a sociocultural perspective I’m aghast at the ‘validity’ this collaboration provides to the ideas and lifestyle espoused by Scott in his music. I thought his stuff might have been different, but I just learned that it has a lot of the same misogynistic ideals of yesteryear. My sensibilities aside, I’m astonished how a brand collab with Scott as a figurehead can happen without uproar, boycotts, protests?! I’m kidding of course, in part, because then I just go back to the business genius of the play and again tip my hat to AP.

I did for a moment really wonder if the new female CEO appreciates Scott and this collaboration…then I came to my senses and realized heck yeah she does for the same reason FHB (and my own business mogul alter ego) does.
Frankly, I also appreciate how Scott has disrupted the industry and set a new standard for success. He is the biggest winner here, and I can’t hate on his unique success. I wont say something inane as my buying this watch or the merch represents my support of African American advancement and business, because there’s plenty other support that the price of this watch could do to support such advancement, but I’ll leave that at that.
At this point I more curious what AP has coming down the line and am saving up like I imagine many others are too.

This is really one of the biggest missteps AP has ever made and really makes me question the brands direction. I don't care if AP makes a Spider-Man watch, I care when they act morally bankrupt and let a guy like this into the factory. Let Travis Scott fling sneakers and McDouble's, he has no business being part of AP's history.
Agree 1000%

It's not about who should be allowed, more like AP's choices for influencers. I do like AP BTW, just not this particular collaboration.

What I mean is that it makes you uncultured in a very specific area and that's nothing to brag about
