Hey guys, question for you based on your experience with the brand... How is the resale on Panerai when compared to a brand like Rolex? Better/worse/similar? In house vs ETA...

Just wondering... NO, I am not trying to figure out if I will be able to retire in 30 years by selling my PAM

Just simply wondering how they do. Any experiences would be greatly appreciated from short to long term ownership

not bad at all, some models keep to or go above MSRP, other like some Rolex, fall quite a bit but not too much.

They do great from my experience. I have never lost money on a Panerai and I have lost lots on Rolex.

If you pick a popular model you will win. There are some desired watches that are the exception. Are you looking new or used? If you go used, you'll never lose.

panerai resale is just as good as rolex if not better esp on paticular models.

Panerai alike with rolex, is a win win in my book.

Panerai watches do great in the resale department. However, those intending to buy and flip immediately at a profit should be careful. Watches are not investment instruments.

Depends on the piece you are buying/selling. Like in the rolex range, you get the highly desirable SS daytona and the initial craze that comes with the SS sports models.

then you get to the solid gold models and datejust that just dont quite retain their value as well when compared to other models.

Better than Rolex

there are ocfourse always excetions. Don't compare a SS daytona wit a steel Panerai chrono. The Daytona is the sought after Rolex and a Chrono is not sought after in the Panerai line (except the Mare nostrums)

1 rule, keep it simple
Don not buy complicated Panerai watches

Their limited editions like the 339 which is available today is always a hit

Pretty darn good as a whole. I've flipped a few and lost very little....except on my first one- PAM 48. There's a good reason for that though.

I would agree, I have owned too and lost my azz on both... I however have flipped them very quickly. One will say that is why but I have flipped SEVERAL Rolex very quickly and NOT lost this kind of $$$ if any

Maybe you did. What models may I ask? Perhaps there's also an assumption that those of us on TRF can comfortably purchase from a solid grey dealer BNIB. Little to no loss will occur on either brand if we go this route. Just a thought...

As with any watch, completely depends on the popularity of your watch. If you buy an unpopular watch (particularly new), then you'll lose quite a lot of value. Limited Edition is only as important as its popularity/desirability - case in point PAM360.

Timing of the market plays into account too. I purchased my 210 quite a few months ago and they seem to be in demand now. If I sold my 210, I could make money easy.

Yeah Bryan, my 176 and a 297... both bought here on TRF one used and one new...

You should not have lost on the 176 if you bought used. 297, I could see, especially if bought new. The bracelets seem to be slowly losing their favor. There are still some that love them however.

i have heard some people say (not on the internet) that Panerai has better resale value than Rolex, if you own the basic ones (historic), not complicated ones.

complicated ones are not desirable among Paneristi because they are not in line with Panerai's history

Unless you're very lucky, expect to lose money on any watch you buy and then sell. I agree that Panerai is no worse than Rolex in terms of resale. Their are other brands whose resale is much worse! Also, I like the point being made about buying pre-owned. Your losses should be minimal (if at all) if you buy a historic Panerai pre-owned.

I think Panerai represents an interesting market for "speculation". You don't always quite know which models might gain more popularity over time, or which might be discontinued after only 2-3 years.

I think with such a fast-moving and changing lineup, there are always new models that periodically leap past the rest of the herd and can steadily hold or gain value over time.

IMO Panerai's resale might be on par with a Rolex but it's still not as recognized as a Rolex worldwide, so the Panerai's resale value might be affected in certain parts of the world.

I think certain panerai ultimately will become more valuable than Rolex. They have been on the public Market for less than 20 years and are already as collectable a Rolex who have been available for nearly a century. Plus the low production runs and serial number system will pay dividends in the near future.
