Smear like mark on cyclops

Hi all, had my GMT a year to the day more or less and haven’t worn it since lockdown but when I put it on this morning I noticed a strange smear mark on the cyclops.

Only found this thread talking about the same issue https://www.rolexforums.com/showthre...=Cyclops+smear

Any other info on this at all? Feeling a bit bummed out about it tbh. Not looking forward to sending it to RSC especially after what happened to my Tudor GMT (which is still skipping days!)

Hope everyone’s staying safe and enjoying their watches!

Sorry to see that. Are you thinking it must have been damaged against another hard object or suspect some other fault (manufacturing etc.)?

Difficult to tell from pictures but you should be able to tell -

does it look like it's on the surface ie. a scratch?

or

does it appear to move around when you move the watch due to the magnification of the cyclops ie. failure of the adhesive under the cyclops?

Rolex doesn't use any surface coatings AFAIK so I think either that's a substantial (and weird) scratch or the cyclops is lifting to some degree.

Have you tried washing it with just plain old soap and water, another possibility the cyclops is just glued on by a glue that activated by ultra violate light that could be the problem the glue it self .

I had the same issue with my LVc. It is the cyclops coming unglued from the crystal. It is a tiny spot that is magnified by the cyclops. I live in Dallas to I walked mine into RSC and they turned it around in 48 hours with apologies.

Sorry about this. It looks like the AR coating is peeling off on top of the cyclops, that is if you can feel it by a finger nail. If you can't, then it's what Peter wrote, the glue underneath. It's rare but not unheard of.
Rolex uses AR treatment on the cyclops and under the crystal. They'll fix it for you under warranty so no worries

Maybe you can take the cyclops off and be the first one ever to have a cyclop-less pepsiC and you can watch people amass against you with torches and pitchforks calling you a heretic. Within 6 feet of course.

Same happened on my sub. AR coating peeled. RSC replaced the crystal under warranty.

Ughhhh. This would drive me insane. Sorry for your troubles. I’m glad to hear from other members this is a known issue and one that can be quickly resolved.

Best of luck getting this resolved quickly and painlessly.

Thanks for the input guys. Hasn’t been knocked and can’t feel anything with my fingernail so I’m thinking it must be the glue...ah well, maybe I’ll wait a while before sending it for repair.

I have a similar though less noticeable thing going on with my Hulk cyclops. Im pretty sure its the anti-reflective coating on the surface of the cyclops scuffed away. The only way to fix it is to replace the entire sapphire crystal and they don't do cyclops only replacement.

I had similar on my 116713 and the crystal was swapped for $130.

There is no AR coating on top of the cyclops. There is also no AR on the crystal except for underneath the cyclops.

You are wrong. Since 2005 Rolex has been doing double-sided anti-reflective coating to avoid glare on the cyclops. Look it up.

Have to agree. My 2020 submariner appears to have a blue AR coat on the outside of the cyclops. The way the blue moves with light and the shape of the arc indicates to me it is not on the flat underside.

The technical paper I've seen shows AR under the main crystal just where the cyclops sits and there is also the material between the crystal and cyclops which could be AR as well as being adhesive.

If you've seen some information that clearly shows there is external AR coating on the cyclops then please link so I can also "look it up".

[edit: not the Monochrome Watches cyclops article ("Since 2005, it also features double-sided anti-reflective coating to avoid glare") as that is not specific about where the coatings are]

Looks like glue underneath to me. Just curious, has it been exposed to warmer temperatures?

I should have phrased it better

There is AR on top of the cyclops.
There is also underneath the crystal AT the cyclops area ONLY.

On the GMT watches ever since the launch of ceramic models the AR coating was under the cyclops surface, and on the underneath crystal dial side part of the cyclops area.

It looks like glue to me, if soap and water doesn't work try rubbing some goo-gone on it to remove the residue and that should take it off.

If there were anti-reflective coating on the top curved surface of the cyclops, wouldn't you see threads here where guys have scraped their watch across a door jamb or a wall and scraped it off?
