Icon10 Pelikan Fountain Pens

Hey all,

I though I'd ask the fine forum members here what they think of these pens. I've read a lot of good things about the pens themselves and of course the nibs, but I thought I'd see what you guys think.

Specifically, I'm considering the Souveran 800 or 600 collection. Keeping in mine that I have a MB Chopin and the Omas Milord, if anyone can offer size comparisons to those two pens, that would be great. I understand the 800 is a big pen, I just don't know how big. Also, any info about how the nibs write (F,M, etc.) would be very helpful too.

Thanks in advance!

i am writing with a green 800 now. it is my favorite pen of all . The piston mech is flawless and the med nib is the best.its soft but precise. I really want to get the 1000 as it wasnt made when i got my 800, 7 yrs ago. Its much smaller than a MB149 or a montegrappa extra 30. the thing that makes it great is that its a little wider than avg but lighter than most pens. It is hands down the most reliable pen i owned. you will love it.

Thanks Chebert. Your comparison to the 149 helps a lot because I've handled one of those.

John, Pelikan M800 is an excellent writer (wet and smooth).
Pelikan nib tends to be broader (I have 18C F and it writes more like M).
The size is very similar to MB146 (I have both) and comfortable for my small hand.
If you have large hand you may want to consider M1000 (and MB149).

Thanks, Joji. My hands are probably average sized, so I think the 800 will work well. FPH calls it extra large, so it can be hard to tell what it actually sizes out to be.

The M800 is my one and only expensive pen (for now )

I have a fine nib and there is some flex. Quality is top notch. Cheers,

Awesome! Thanks Joji. It looks like the 800 is closest to the 146 of the pens you listed. Might have to get one of those too.

Gelshocker, thanks. I've been waffling a bit on the color, but your green looks great!

You can't beat the Pelikan. I have the M800 fountain and the 400 rollerball: the M800 is for sketching, although it's a great writer in fine point. The 400 is for writing in fine pnt. Quality can't be beat. I've had a Monte Blanc ball pnt. for almost 17 years, and is still my favorite. Fine pens are like fine watches, wines, cars, shoes, and women, you take care of them and they will last forever. Ciao!

I have not actually seen one, the curator at the pen museum just down the road from me, (about 50 miles) rates them very highly, read his first comment.

You know what I find amazing about FP's? How easily spending $400 on a pen starts sounding reasonable! "Oh yeah, that's a good price!"

John, they are great pens with lovely nibs, talking of which the nibs are really easily interchanged so you could have a fine and a nice broad stub for when your feeling more artsy!!

Oh yes, what's fountain penaholic

I love Pelikan! They are comfortable, attractive and affordable. Moreover, they write great! I purchased a Pelikan BP in the mid-eighties, and later on, when Parker started manufacturing gel refills, I was happy that they were compatible with my pen. You will not regret purchasing one.

Faith, thanks for the input.

Well, I've been a bad boy again. Fine-nibbed blue Souveran 800 on the way from FPH. This after I promised myself yesterday I'd enjoy the two I have for a while. Fountain penaholic indeed.

Thanks to Ian and Phillip, Joji, probably a vintage Parker 51. I think they're even pretty affordable, but I definitely want to sample a vintage pen. I'm sure that will start me down another slippery slope!

After that, who knows?

John, Congratulations on the new Pelikan. They are beautiful well made pens. I think the easily changeable nibs are one of the best features of a Pelikan.
