Icon2 Why is this Meters 1st Gilt Dial 5513 priced so high?

http://www.network54.com/Forum/20767...+dial+and+case

Anyone have any ideas? Meters 1st 5513's, from what I saw, usually go for between 4 and 6k USD depending on condition. Can anyone tell me why is this one selling for 12k+?

I have not seen gilt dial 5513s going for that range. Usually with gilt 5513s its around $6k upwards.

This one does seem expensive but the case and lugs do look like they are in excellent condition and the dial also appears to be pretty good with no crazing or tritium loss.

I would say that without box/papers around $9k might be more reasonable.

Ahh so it's the gilt dial that makes that watch extraordinary? I believe the ones that I was referring to were matte dials...

Wow that's quite a bit of difference between gilt and matte!!

Sunny,

The older glossy dials typically do not age as well as matte dials thru the years. Spotting and discoloration are very common. If this glossy gilt is original and has not been touched up, condition like the one shown would be pretty rare.

Cheers,

EP

It's really a nice 5513 gilt dialed! They are the rarest and prices are the higher for 5513 of course

Sunny- Here is an example of a beautiful 1962 Gilt dial with closed minute ring -2 line meters first. Clearly the dial pops on this one far more than most you get to see. This is a 2 day post surgery post--one of the few I will be doing over the next week--LOL!!

Great watch Ken! That one is on my Christmas list... I've tried to be an extra good boy this year.

Hope you get back on your feet soon. Thanks for the great pic!

It's funny how a small detail like a ring or an underline can make such an impact on the aesthetics of a watch. Going to have to add this reference to my "to buy" list. Unfortunately, it's a long list so it may be a while until I can pick one up.

In some circumstances a dial is 80% or more of the value of a watch..the 6538 is one watch that comes to mind.

regarding the vintage 5513, late 60's, Can someone explain the term "gilt", how it looks on the watch, and how it affects the value? Thanks very much.

They are glossy dials versus flat matte dials with gold or silver applied to the surface of the dial. Rolex stopped making them in the late 60's and thus the supply out there vs. matte is quite limited. Also--to find one in perfect shape is rare and thus will command quite a premium--often making up a large portion of the value of the watch.

I see - thanks very much. I just purchased the one in the picture above - by your description I'd say it is not gilt but I've not seen it in person yet. The markers have a yellow hue, not white as some, which I like the look of but I'm not sure if that is "desirable" in terms of value. I was excited to find one in such good condition and with all the original paperwork, box, etc. I believe it is a 1968. I'm far from a watch expert as you can tell by my questions but I love the vintage look compared to the new ones.

Because the metric system makes more sense to the civilized world but for some reason there's a couple holdouts that carry quite a bit of influence.

Rolex discontinued making Gilt dials in 1965-66. Yours appears to have nice patina though and quite a good looking matte dial. Congrats and enjoy it!

I think if you ever put that one up for sale it would go fast, the dial has unbelievable patina, pretty much perfect. I know would jump at it if the price was right.
