Icon2 "Here's Why Grand Seiko is Better than Rolex"

Watchfinder's click-bait titles can get a bit irritating at times, but this new one actually delivers: www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2Ec93qXzjs

Of course I did.

Most of the comments were favourable but some mentioned issues.

The blue logo on the reverse blocking a clear view of the movement is just an abomination.

I can see the quality in GS, but still waiting for a design that grabs me.

The only problem with this brand is the aftersale service. They don't have enough service centers around the world.

Only downside with them amazing polished hands are you can see the underside of the second hand isn't finished at all , plus why no lume?

If they would just polish the back side of that seconds hand...once seen you can’t unsee it again.

That entire video I’m just triggered by all the “Grand Seiko and GS” branding. That’s the number 1 reason I don’t buy a GS. Get that text off the dial!

tough crowd.....

I'm astounded that the dark blue indices on the 24 hr track are applied, not printed !
That particular model is not a watch for me, but it is astoundingly beautifully detailed.

I had a GS diver - I was very impressed. The quality was better than my Exp II, but for all of that, it's not a rolex.

Sorry, I only just noticed you took five quotes from the Comments section under the video (lack of quotation marks got me). I first thought you were talking generally about the presenter's comments and that the above five comments that followed were your thoughts.

When you’re my age Adam.

I thought ‘some mentioned issues’ would cover that.

No, I need correctly applied quotation marks at that time of the morning

Never realised that model had the Daini thunderbolt ALL over the dial.

As a bit of (vintage) Daini fanboi, I'm now in love...

Wow and Rolex have very little text in their dials?

I’m always amazed how they fit that little essay in the already cramped dial of the Daytona. If anyone needs to reduce text on dials, definitely Rolex!

The quality is definitely there for GS, they just don’t have the heritage and brand recognition of Rolex.

I was one of the few who loved the Seiko - Grand Seiko branding. Gave the fact that GS was part of the greater group which, IMO, is nothing to be ashamed of. Guess I'm alone in that though...

If it were up to me there'd be a brand hallmark logo, the model name if it's something historic and interesting, and maybe 1 brag line like "Spring Drive" or Hi-Beat". But no Grand Seiko, no Seiko, no water resistance, no Automatic, none of that junk.

I agree and am also one for cleaner dials, and that is exactly my point, there is generally a lot more text on Rolex dials. Do we really need "Officially Certified" on the dial? That is definitely the most unnecessary wording ever on a dial!

ok ok, i lied.
i do admit the video was a bit long. i mean i love watchfinder vids, but there wasn't a whole lot of content, although he did wax lyrical

i also think that, while it it's clear the finish on this watch is 10x better than any Rolex ever, he didn't really explain what else makes the watch better

and his mention of GS crushing the Swiss brands should have included mention of the spring drive movement, since that was what did it and not the standard automatic (correct me if I'm wrong)

The Seiko heritage and history is every bit the equal of Rolex. Whether your average Rolex owner appreciates that or not is another matter.

The guy's voice in the video....just can't do it.

As for the topic, I don't think of one as "better" than the other. Rolex and Grand Seiko each do some things better than the other. I'm just really happy to be fortunate enough to own and enjoy watches from both brands.

Love GS, have owned one and have long lusted for a SBGJ235.

Having said that, the comment regarding the lack of finishing on the underside of the seconds hand and that being reflected on the top of the minutes hand caught me off guard. That is indeed a slip on GS's part.

He was talking about the 1960s, when Seiko beat the Swiss in their own Chronometer competitions so completely that they were actually shut down. Basically Omega was the only brand that beat Seiko, but only by putting up quartz movements against Seiko's mechanicals. There's a good video explaining all about it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayUT5WfkHrA

Yes, Spring Drive is always brought up as though Grand Seiko doesn't make INCREDIBLE mechanical watches.
