Icon4 Dilemma!?!?!?! Datejust

Hi today I was looking at a Datejust 1601 but the guy I went to has a Linen Datejust 1601 from 1970 (first picture) great condition and he also had a Datejust 1601 with a Silver dial for sale also from 1970(second picture) with a new glass and a new Rolex Replacement Jubilee band. Which one is worth choosing for? I like them both a lot can’t really choose which one is the best option and holds value best....

Please help me out..

It looks to me as if the second one is in slightly better condition.

I think it depends which dial you personally prefer. I like the linen dial, but maybe that's just because I don't have one...

They will both hold value, or at least have so far.

It could be the lighting, but the linen one looks to have a bit more corrosion on the hands/indices, and the sunburst one does have the (apparent) advantage of better crystal/bracelet AND has a nice even patina on the tritium.

If you are leaning/loving the linen dialled one, then I mean, you'll be the one wearing it. If you can't decide between them, maybe it's time to have a bit of distance and see what other options are out there.

The silver linen sparkles really nice under lighting if that’s important to you...it looks really cool IMO

It's entirely a matter of personal taste. The linen is more "special", but the silver is classic and always a popular choice. Please don't get hung up on value, just decide what you like.

If it helps, you can find dials on eBay for about 200$. I’d choose the second one

I'd personally lean towards the no-lume linen dial but both look nice. Entirely subjective.

I like the linen and you could always get the hands replaced at some point.

Personally, I’d choose the linen, especially as it’s a no-lume dial. Linen dial is a nice, less common look, I like those very thin dial markers, and replacing the hands would be easy and inexpensive, if you chose to.

Maybe, in order to make the sale, they’d be willing to put the new bracelet on that one? I doubt there’s much difference in current or future value, so definitely get whichever one you like best.

Definitely a toin coss. Just go with your gut feeling - crystal and bracelet are replaceable, so shouldn't be main factors in the decision.

I'm sure you can ask him to switch the bracelets if you have a particular preference - they're fully interchangeable.

Sliver one seems to be in better condition. Is it just me, or does the linen dial look like it’s been redone? Or maybe just replacement hands? Something doesn’t seem right because those are lume hands and no lume on the dial.

I've still got that dial, just need a fat 1802 for it. :)

I'll go against the grain ... Definitely prefer the silver dial. That's a general statement, but specifically in this case, the matching tritium patina on the silver dial gives it even more of an advantage vs. the non-lume linen dial.

The linen just looks a little fussy, like something my grandfather might have worn. I find the silver dial to be more classic vintage Rolex, with a cleaner look. Completely subjective, of course, and the linen dial is nice too.

Lovely

The only reference in my opinion (and vintage DJ) that looks appropriate on an elegant strap.

Linen +1! Proper hands shouldn't be too hard to find.
