Considering my first Patek - Input please!

Hi guys and gals,

I've been voraciously collecting Tudor for a number of years now. I still don't know how or why I became so infatuated with the brand, but I'm getting to the point where I think diversification is necessary. There are still a number of Tudor grails I'm after, but they are not easily found so I need to wait and hunt to find desirable examples (7924, eagle beak, homeplate).

Lately I've found myself looking st complications from JLC, IWC Mont Blanc and obviously Patek. I am considering the new IWC annual calendar w blue dial, but my heart and gut are stuck on the 5960/1a.

Is this a good first Patek? Any input about complications in general? Any other Patek models I should consider? Other brands?

Thanks!!

It's a great first patek, you just need to get it at the right price. It's a less desirable one because of the bracelet but if you put a leather band on it...boom brand new watch. There's one on TRF right now for $33k which is close to fair. Patek is about complications and that being said this is a good bang for the buck if you like it.

Happy hunting!

Obviously totally subject what you like, but that is not one of my favorites. Get it well below retail if you do.

I think 5960/1A is a very good 1st Patek.

The 5960 has two complications (annual calendar and chronograph) and when purchased at a reasonable price, it can be a good "bang for the buck".

However try the watch on your wrist first. It is one of the "thicker" Patek watches and it is not for everyone.

The 5960 is very nice. Others to consider would be any nautilus.

I have always liked the black, white and red on the watch. I tried one on last week and had mixed feelings about the wear and size. I am used to wearing Rolex and Tudor. The prices are very soft on these watches and if you can buy right I say why not. My personal favorite right now is the 5711. Either blue or white dial. Prices are strong and resale is great. Only finding one at a fair price is a challenge.

A lot has been written about the 5960, most of the loudest comments by the ones who dont own this particular reference.
If I remember correctly this is also one of the first non limited production STEEL AC/chronos in the Parek product offerings.
Most people are put off by the bracelet despite the fact that this bracelet styling is 100% patek DNA. Due to its shine it has often been compared to breitling.

Its a nice watch and the way the date windows are done differs from the other 5960 models (nicer imo).

This watch has been on my radar but at swiss retail of 45000 (around 41700 taxfree) one would be better off purchasing pre owned at this time.

However, if this is your first watch and you value the first owner experience with a dealerstamp that is meaningful to you.... Then its clear which way you should choose.

You will enjoy it, but as stated, you have to buy that watch right. Go check the secondary market pricing.

I liked the bracelet, same clasp as the Nautilus if that matters to you.

That's a good watch but you can't beat Nautilus or a nice Calatrava. The Steel 5960 is at every Patek AD and not selling too well,so I would only buy that if you get a massive reduction.

Whoa great pic of that one. 5960 is a great first Patek. Honestly I'm jealous that you're starting so high up the food chain. I started with a 3919j :/

I have the 5960 and love it!!!
Great 1st Patek. Not too many chrono annual calendars out there in general. Patek has done a nice job with there offerings over the years!

There is a lot to like about he 5960/1a. Great complications. Spectacular colors on the dial. You can find minty used ones in the low thirties, making it a pretty good value.

The only thing to be wary of is the thickness. It's NOT a thin watch. I highly recommend trying one on before u pull the trigger.

I would recommend either 5726 or 5712 for a first Patek

Agree. 5712/1a was my first Patek.

I flipped it, unfortunately. One of the few regrettable flips I've made. Lesson learned.

Not my cup of tea. How about a "classic" PP like a Nautilus or a Calatrava? It is a matter of personal preference, of course...
