Can you help me understand the Speedmaster Racing line?

Hello everyone,

I’m contemplating my next watch purchase, went to the Omega boutique and they still have the Speedmaster Racing 40mm (not on their website anymore). It’s a beautiful sportswatch and fits my smallish wrist perfectly.

BUT... I’m not sure I understand the Racing line of the Speedmaster. I always hear about the Moonwatch but never about the Racing. I’m not sure what place in the family they have and what they stand for.

Can anybody help me here?

Before the Speedmaster was associated with space it was a sports watch, particularly associated with Motorsport.





Once the space marketing started, this seemed to have been put on the back burner. However, there are examples of specific racing dialled Speedmaster Professionals (42mm case size, and actually very few in the small 39mm case too) starting from around 1968 and into the early 1970s.





The specific small-cased Speedmasters you are interested in seem to be a marketing spin-off from those, but also reaching back to the Speedmaster's roots. Why Omega chose the smaller case and automatic movements for that line I don’t know, but to me the lineage is obvious.

BTW, racing dialled Speedmasters are still in the catalogue, and they come in 40mm and 44mm models.

I think I remember reading a few years ago that when chronos were manual only that Omega led the way in motor racing. But I thought when I read it that Heuer were bigger.

Thanks, very helpful. Unfortunately they are not on the catalogue on the UK site, but I can see they still are on the US site. I wonder if they are going to have a new Racing 40mm soon? Although it seems unlikely given how they give priority to bigger watches...

Omega boutique’s salesman today confirmed they (racing 40mm) are not on the online catalogue and they are phasing them down. Could the be coming out with a new racing 40mm soon?
