Thanks!
In 2006, RSC Dallas brought it back from near-ruined after too many years as a tool watch. It was a gift from my folks when I joined the US Navy in January, 1966.

I had always aspired to own a SS sub and in 1994 when I started to earn a little money I sought out a 16610. At the time the retail was like $2,300 (a lot of money at the time for me). I was able to play two ADs off each other and ended up paying $1,700. Still have the watch and love every bit as much as the day I got it. I remember around 2000 when Subs broke the $5,000 price point and I scratched my head wondering who in their right mind would pay $5K for a SS Sub. Silly question now but it’s all relative to the moment.

Pricelist from HK Ad circa July 16, 1992.
https://imgur.com/RgZnNEZ HK price for 5-digit sub date is 17730 HKD. The exchange rate for USD that time is around 7.7345, so that's roughly $2292. |

Picked up my SD 16600 in 2007 for £2935, there was a date sub in the window for £2930 and a yachtmaster I think, £2930 as well.

And they were like DJs now. You can enter an AD and pick any SS Sub or GMT you wanted and get a very good discount. Everybody wanted DJs and DDs. How times change.

Think my father paid about £700 for his 5513 in 1980.

Yes, it's a different game now. You need a significant big chunk of money to buy a Submariner today, an old or a new one. They have more than doubled in price in the last decade.
A shame, I never really had the money back then to buy more than one, if prices were there today I'd have a few more, but at today's prices it's harder to justify to me. |

Have you any idea about what the average wage was then? I suspect that there will be a big difference when comparing the watch price / average wage ratio of 1966 to now. |

You don’t even have to go that far back to see a dramatic difference in prices.
1. Go to the classified section 2. Search any model number 3. Go backwards about 10-15 pages 4. Be prepared to pass out lol

I bought my SD16600 in 1992 for about $ 2300 USD. About a 15% discount at the time.
