Help choosing between PAM560 / PAM111

Hello all and happy holidays

First time posting in the Panerai sub-forum. I am looking to diversify my collection and this has brought me to Panerai, a brand I always found difficult to choose and differentiate between the models...but a bit of research has cleared up a lot of that confusion.

I am drawn to the Luminor range going pre-owned, 44mm big but good for my flat wrist, 2 hand dial or w/small seconds. Open case back.

I've tracked down 2 that I can go and take a look at in person. One is a PAM111 from 2004:
(translated text)Buckle 300m waterproof
Accessories: Warranty (2004), BOX, booklet, chronometer certificate, screwdriver
* The rubber belt is genuine and in good condition.
Overhaul and exterior finish are done by our affiliated craftsmen.
$4250
https://www.kame-kichi.com/webitem-51363.html

The next one and one I am leaning to is a PAM560 from 2016
[Accessories] Genuine box / guarantee (regular in July 2016) / replacement belt (rubber / leather)
[Warranty] 6 months from the date of purchase Only internal movement natural failure
[Condition] Overhaul and exterior finish have been completed at our affiliated workshop. The glass is in good condition. The case is in very good condition with only minor scratches. You can see the feeling of use on the leather belt while wearing it.
* It may be difficult to see in the photo. Please feel free to contact us for details.
$4400

Faced with a choice, which one would you go for?

I'd go with the 111. I personally don't care too much for the in-house movement and I think the 111 is more of a classic. Both are great though.

I prefer the classic 111 between the two.

But what is ur reason for preferring the 560?

I suppose the fact that the 560 is newer, the fact that is has the in-house movement and the whole package comes with extra straps.

But I see how many of you simply prefer the classic 111

The 111. 2004 is probably a G series, which is a series many hunt for (thick painted lume, Panerai markings on the movement, larger brushed crown guard (CG) compared to earlier smaller, polished CGs (so the CG is more like pre-Vendôme CGs on the G)).

Looking at the photo, it seems like a G due to the CG. I can’t tell from the next which series it is. I would verify the series before buying, just to be sure it’s not an F or earlier with a replaced CG from service.

I personally have never warmed up to the 560. 8-day movement without power reserve doesn’t do a lot for me, and “8 DAYS” on the dial does even less. YMMV.

Good luck with the choice! Panerais are a lot of fun with a lot of style.

Wow, unanimous for the 111. The same store has another 111 but about $600 more, that one doesn't have the "Panerai" decorated movement but does have the sandwich dial...I'm guessing that's why the price difference.

Cheers

OP, a word about this fellow Cru ...

He claims to be an average Panerai enthusiast and no expert of any kind. In truth, he’s quite knowledgeable. He likes to be very low key about his opinions.

I’m going to agree with Cru and many of the others and say get the 111. It looks prettier to my eye

Between those two, I would go with the 111, for the reasons of ..

- it has the older "Panerai" on the movement
- I like small second :D
- I prefer 560 to have sandwich dial

If the 560 has sandwich dial, then I would go with that instead because ...

- 560 has a slightly slimmer case, different crystal and different fonts on the dial, which all I prefer
- I prefer in-house movement (personal preference)

I would combine the two and look for a 510 with sandwich dial. haha

The sandwich dials do look nice. There are a few 111s around with sandwich dial but the movements always have the Geneva waves instead of the "Panerai" repetition. Odd thing is, looking at the photos of the 111 I'm interested in, I can see that the dial is not sandwich yet the markings on the dial do not look raised, they still look beneath the surface. Hard to tell as the image quality gets pixelated.

cheers

Haha, I got that impression but very much appreciated. Will be interested to see if it it in fact a G serial.

The 8-day movements have a problem that intermittently strikes...some examples will keep ridiculous time when first wound (like +30/day), then settle into accuracy for later days. I had a 590, I could literally watch it gain a second per minute when first wound. If you get a chance to examine the 560, it would be a good idea to at least fully wind it and check timeline after 5 or 10 minutes.

I would also strongly advise you to try on some 1950/47mm models. While some remain happy with 44 mm cases, many feel they are too small after owning them for a spell and getting more comfortable with Panerai’s size.

Thanks for all the advice here! I went along to the store in Nakano Broadway in Tokyo and came home with the same PAM00111 in the link. Nice it had been overhauled and looked great for a 16 year old watch. It is a G serial bought from an AD in Venice.

The leather belt was missing but on my way home I called into the Panerai boutique and ordered a brown calf strap...pricey! But I would like one OEM before getting others. Actually Jack Road in Nakano have their own range made to order so a nice alligator strap might be on the cards in the future.

Cheers
