Icon5 Members over the age of 75, what’s your advice for getting or staying healthy?

Is it food, exercise, friends and family, work?

What’s your secret?

low impact exercise, low body weight, and happy family life! (Not necessarily in that order; and it should be said, I'm not quite of that age yet, so opinions subject to change.)

Although I’m not in this age bracket, I’d say everything in moderation:

Eat right, but don’t deprive yourself of indulgences from time to time.

Exercise but don’t go ballistic. Stay active but not to extremes.

As for family and friends, small doses

All of the above. My dad just turned 81. Thankfully he’s in great physical shape. He golfs twice a week, walks daily and is particular about his diet and his weight. He’s not a health food nut at all. He eats in moderation. He spends time with family and friends. He stays active.

He retired at age 58 and has never looked back.

I can say that my family members in isolation deteriorated extremely quickly while those that stay around others and socialize much more often were much happier and are staying around much longer. Regardless of diet and exercise (which I agree are still improving and can’t be ignored completely), I think social engagement is something that doesn’t get near as much attention.

My parents are late 70s and 80. Neither are on a single bit of medication. Both still work in our family business 4 days a week (C19) allowing. My Dad has bone and joint issues, replacement knee (opened up 3 times) and hip. My Mum was always slightly overweight but never hugely. They’d tell you it’s all about moderation. Both gave up smoking 30 years ago but both have at least a glass of wine nightly and keeping active.

This article prompted me to look up longevity secrets of Queen Elizabeth II. Three articles all had different suggestions. Sense of purpose, though, is important (genes too..her mother lived to be 100).

A family member did great well after 80. He did exercise and eat well, and drank wine and margaritas in moderation (no more than a drink a day). Above all he remained “young at heart,” never considering himself to be an “old man,” just an experienced one. He loved being with people and hearing what they had to say, traveling, reading, and writing. He enjoyed trying things, whether it was a book, a movie, a bottle of wine, a restaurant, or a travel destination. He was always reading a book, and towards the end of his life (premature, due to a fall and then post-surgical infection in the hospital) kept an online travel blog. So, intellectually curious, social, and open to new experiences.

Exercise in moderation is also important.

Her father died relatively young, probably the fourth British king to die of smoking in that century.

My doc told me, do not climb ladders, do not drive drunk or under the influence, or ride with anyone under the influence, do not smoke. These three are the biggest causes of significant loss of quality of life as we grow older. The others, good food, medications, a wife, sense of good, are all important, but not as important as the quality of life issues he pointed out. I have a family member in emergency medicine who adds stay off of motorcycles.

It is how we deal with risk.

With C19 it’s definitely more difficult to spend time with friends and family.

My 94 year old great uncle set the example for me when a waitress at a Vail restaurant asked if we would like bottled or tap water and her replied “My God! Did you run out of wine.”
