Always loved the combo of the mechanical with such an iconic case design... If I were buying the case design, I would want the trad OQ however I might also want the mechanical just to have a less common variant that looks like an OQ at first blush.

my 17013 is enroute from Dallas RSC as I write this.
The motor was shot and it was replaced with new at a cost of 700$.
Im still below market as far as cost to own. I chose to go the RSC route to ensure
“new” parts and qualified technicians on a unique movement. It should outlast me now.
I absolutely think an OQ belongs in a Rolex collection, plus the brushed two tone
is a nice, subtle alternative to the other stainless and gold models.

Good luck. If there's any decision you'll never regret, this is it.

I agree! Thus far I have only regretted watches I didn’t buy and never watches I did buy...

Once again, damn all you enablers in this thread. I found and purchased a very nice full set 17000 from 1982 for a reasonable price. Will be shipped next week.

Well done. Looks nice. Either unpolished or very beautifully detailed. Post pics when it arrives.

The watch arrived today, looks incredible. It does not run however...so I have ordered a renata 357 battery which should arrive tomorrow. I must say I was a bit blinded/misled by the store that described the watch as being in "very good condition". I don't think that is a correct description (never mind the great exterior) without having inspected the watch and verify that it runs after a battery change. Will post updates and pictures.

Looking forward to seeing it. But who sells a watch without mentioning that it's not running?? Hope it works out.

Hope this works out for you. I love the OQ. The shape is incredible. Try not to polish it too much. I know this is advice for any watch but especially the OQ because the sharp edges really soften up changing the appearance drastically. Great pick up!

Anyone know approximately when the OQ 17013 transitioned from 14k to 18k gold?

My plan was to remove the case back and test with a new battery....but it is impossible to remove it. Guess I will have to go to the AD and ask for help. I don't like that. They always come up with stuff that needs to be done on the watches in order to make more money. This particular AD must ALWAYS replace the crown.

Right. My AD always insists on a full service anytime I need something minor for my OQ (like a battery change or a replacement for a chipped crystal). It's not a cheap watch to own. But worth every penny.

Drama over, battery replaced at AD (not for free in Sweden) and the watch works fine according to the watchmaker. Will pick it up tomorrow and post pictures.
But it was a learning experience: when buying something in great condition this can trick you into forgetting asking basic questions such as if the watch runs. It was a small chock to unbox it and discover that it was dead.

Same here, but the mechanical ones are approaching 10 grand USD now for a nice example.

Great news. Can't wait to see it.

Asking whether it was running or not isn't a basic question. The seller should have disclosed this. There's no fault on your part.

Old posts here and on a couple of other forums seem to converge on early-mid 1980’s. Very likely before 9mil. s/n’s were shipped from the OQ listings I’ve seen.

To all you OQ owners, great watches and many congrats! I have a stupid question but before I ask it, a small explanation story.

I was giving a program at my club, (an antique and collectors club), on Rolex watches. A lot of our members attend estate sales and some had purchased “Rolex” watches at incredibly cheap prices, of course they were fake, so my presentation was very basic and general methods of determining if a Rolex was real, at least not an obvious fake. One lady said: “Oh I know how to tell, if the second hand goes tick-tick-tick, then it’s a fake. I pointed out Rolex in fact DID make quartz watches back in the 80s, and they were quite valuable. ANYWAY...

Have any of you ever been questioned/accused of your Rolex being a fake because it had a Quartz movement?

Valid question! Have not been accused of having a fake “ticker” but have been asked what kind of AP Rolex I’m wearing...a couple of guys were really shocked that Rolex made an AP looking watch (17014)...: )

I have a 17000 Mk1 OQ and a 17013 Mk2, both with box and papers and originally bought in Spain, I really love them. The first is from 1980 and the later 1991. Both are working perfect and with a 400 euros service they will still doing tic tac for another 40 years...
