Hard watch to get at retail. Big watch that many find harder to wear. Looks like a DJ from a distance. Fairly scarce in the Rolex world compared to other sports models.
All that being said it's one of the best watches they have ever made. I think it's absolutely fantastic. Relatively complicated especially for Rolex. At retail it's a whole lot of watch for the money.

Ahhh love rebirthing old threads... especially when I'm wearing the timepiece.
The price is excellent imho, yet as many know availability is slim.

Not sure but I love mine and my wrist is 6.5”, or do but I’m 6 foot tall, but I still don’t understand the “too big for wrist” issues. Wear it if you like it!

Really eye catching and good reading this thread, I have a Sub 116610LN and the SD is one watch that sparks my interest.
Looks like a nice clean design with great selection of dial colours which are nicely complimented by the date and month marker. Would make a really excellent choice for a daily watch without the attention of the Daytona, just my opinion. Dave |

How does it compare size wise to the current EXP II?

at least for me.... its a big watch. Unfortunately sits like a dinner plate on my wrist.
For others with larger wrists, i'm sure its better. so i think just size excludes a % of the members from actually wanting to own a SkyD which leads to less discussions |

The stainless Sky Dweller has only been out for just over 3 years. Yes, that model is only 5-10K over the others, but given the youth of that model-there still are relatively few of them out there-compared to the other models. (Thus, a potential link to the sparse threads) The Sky Dweller sits near the top of Rolex offering (most complicated movement and all...) In PM-with a full bracelet, you are paying ~ almost fitty (about the same points Alabama has scored per game this year...)

There’s been a lot of pics of the sky dweller on smaller wrists lately that I think look fine. Your one is a stunner btw! |

How hard is it to get the black Sky Dweller at retail? I've heard that most ADs get 1 or 2 per year, anybody knows if that is true?

Wearing my Polar now, SS SkyD a few days back... SkyD has a MUCH heavier and thicket head, less balanced on the wrist too. SkyD wears quite a bit bigger of course.

Has anyone else noticed there are a lot less champagne dial two-tone models vs. the white and back dial variations?

Can someone tell me what "perpetual calendar" means? Does the date under the cyclops jump from 28 to 1 at the end of February, etc?

No, that’s an “annual” calendar.
“Perpetual” calendar, which Rolex does not produce, requires no adjustment for 2/28 nor 2/29 ... it’s perpetual.

Because most people just have $40k extra to spend on a watch.

It wears a bit bigger on me. It will depend on the wrist size and shape. It's a big Rolex but it's not a big watch.
My SS has now been joined by a TT. Some fantastic photos on this thread. I've enjoyed looking at them again. Poor quality side by side taken in haste today: |

My AD gets approximately one TT per year. A black one and a champagne one arrived within 12 months of each other, followed by a white one (now mine) which took over 12 months to turn up. They get around four SS Sky Dwellers a year. This makes the TT more rare, but more available due to the lesser demand. Around five per year at my AD (excluding PM which I have no idea about) doesn't make the Sky Dweller range all that common. It is not surprising that they are less well represented than the models Rolex bash out in big numbers. You know, the ones that are as common as navels despite being nearly impossible to buy from an AD who may well have a comparatively rare TT Sky Dweller or two in the vault! |

Thank god that everyone has a different taste or this world would be pretty bland. The SkyD is not for everybody but it is stunning for me. I love it before getting to own one after two years of waiting! It does not matter what color dial, it is amazing.
