3rd Generation Inherited Heirloom

Hi Vintage experts,

My sister just inherited a vintage Rolex watch that used to belong to our grandmother. I’ve been searching online to find some information about it to see if it is even authentic.

I would really appreciate any information in regards to the watch pictured below.

Good looking cocktail watch from the early years.

If it isn't something that she wants, or ever expects to wear, the diamonds can be taken out and made into a nice ring, necklace, or earrings. Any value is in the raw materials.

There is not a real market for these except as historical pieces or nice heirlooms.

Exquisite and appears genuine and original.

The serial number is from mid-1960’s - some databases peg it in 64-65 range.

Perhaps a Ref.2166 with a Cal.1401 inside. I’ve seen lesser encrusted examples in the $8K range but your sister’s should be insured for a good deal more. An appraisal may come back with double that replacement value.

That is a beautiful watch and would be a shame to break it up purely for the value of the diamonds. Looks like something a European monarch or princess would wear during a jubilee celebration or something. Certainly a nice addition to the crown jewels!

I think that this is one of the rare ladies' cocktail watches that should be preserved carefully. It's so spectacular, that even if these watches are not really in fashion today, if interest increases in the future, this will be one of the examples that achieves top value.

Truly beautiful. Get it valued by more than one jeweler...focusing on the stones and the settings. This style of woman's watch just doesn't get much interest these days. But as others have said, the combination of it being a Rolex, plus all those diamonds will certainly give you an idea of what to insure it for...and insure it you should. And when the occasion is as fancy as the watch, one of the ladies in your family should wear it.

I would strongly recommend against taking the diamonds out. That will destroy the value. I don't know how much it is worth, but being a Rolex it's probably worth more the way it is then destroying it for raw parts. I'd leave it as is.

Keep it. Enjoy it. It's beautiful and a piece of Rolex history. There is definitely value associated with it because it is a Rolex.

Agreed. It would be a shame to break it up.

It’s a gorgeous watch! I even love its case! Any backstory on how your grandmother got it, or what she wore that to? That was definitely not a watch for the “average Jane” back in the day!
