Posts getting deleted?

Does anyone know what's going on? I swear posts/threads are getting deleted in this forum. Am I going crazy?

I noticed this as well. Deleted or closed threads, typically when the topic turns towards the decline in value of watches. Guessing the sponsors are whining about conversations that undermine their pricing strategies. Just a guess of course.

It's nothing to do with sponsors or trusted sellers. It's about the rules, and how far they're allowed to be bent before threads are closed. Some members report investment/price up/down threads for breaking the rules, and if there are too many, or if they drag on to the point of rudeness between members, they get locked or, in some cases, removed. Mods have better things to do than worry about the feelings of so-called "trusted sellers".

See the rules, specifically this one . . .

(iv) THIS IS A ROLEX WATCH DISCUSSION FORUM AND NOT A PRICE OR INVESTMENT OR DISCOUNT DISCUSSION FORUM SO IF YOU HAVE A QUERY REGARDING PRICES, INVESTMENTS OR DISCOUNTS THEN MAKE YOUR OWN PERSONAL ENQUIRIES AND INVESTIGATIONS AND DO NOT POST THOSE ISSUES HERE.

Your post was moved out of Rolex General Discussion because it's not about Rolex watches and you were asking questions that are best answered in this section.

Kind of a strange explanation, but sure.

Agree to disagree I guess.

With due respect, then I recommend not allowing rules to be bent at all. If there is a rule, it should be enforced so people clearly and unambiguously know what they can and cannot post.

It was as straight forward an explanation as can be. Your thread pertained nothing to the topic of Rolex watches, so it was moved to a more appropriate section of the boards. Nothing out of the ordinary at all…
Whether you agree is irrelevant.

Further, posts are removed at times, along with entire threads when deemed needed, and at the behest of moderation. If your post happened to be within that, consider it collateral damage.
These removed threads/posts are necessary at times, in accordance with both the rules of the forum, and the merit of a cohesive discussion rather than an argumentative one.
Ultimately, we can’t please them all (you), but we do strive for the many.

Rules are clearly posted, and also agreed to when signing up for the forum.
But I’d bet less than half even read them.
Therefore, without being overbearing and militant in the day to day discussions, we try to let “most” interactions naturally flow..
We do have limits however…

I would be much more heavy handed as a moderator and was on other forums. It’s a thankless job to encourage conversation but the conversation has to be steered to stay on topic. The moderator doesn’t always want to police childish and toxic behavior all the time because when it starts, the conduct tends to let other new members think this kind of brawling is acceptable here and it ain’t.

TRF is not Facebook or like other social media that runs rampant with drive-by trolls looking to start trouble. I expect and appreciate the moderators “cleaning house”. Especially when threads are just cyclical complaining and toxic.
Disrespect and impolite jabbing and taunting needs to be squashed asap. The TRF standards of posting was usually kept to higher standard of civility.
All this “they will get theirs”, “they need to get burned”, blah, blah is petty crap that doesn’t belong on TRF. Suck it up and be a grownup as these are luxury watches no one is making you buy, nor do you need.
This isn’t free therapy to vent that your not happy with whatever part of hobby be it price, availability, or whatever. Be happy, it’s a watch forum about WATCHES. Discuss the actual watch and your mood will improve.

Thank you Mods for trying to enforce the rules.

It seems that some even want to argue about what a rule even means.

Excuse my ignorance but why was it ok to discuss appreciating prices which were equally annoying but not falling prices?

The posts were deleted due to the rule being:

That's fair. However this thread is sticked solely for prices:

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=631175

It seems the rule in question needs some refinement.

I understand the desire for stopping a zillion threads asking about values for 40 year old DJs. However, enthusiasts have a genuine need for visibility into the present market as a whole.

I can see how this approach of deleting/locking such threads rubs some up the wrong way. I agree that the forum rules could have been enforced more strictly in the case of those threads OP refers to, in the past.
I have always hated all the speculation and been quite vocal about that. And quite frankly there were times that many members' approaches here seemed to me as if they were defiant of sound reason unless an agenda was being pushed.
With that said, I refuse to believe that the forum has, or ever has had, become the vehicle of certain players with the aim to make a quick buck out of unsuspecting members.
If I ever feel this way, I'll make sure to let anyone who should, know about it for what it's worth.
So, coming back to the current state and practice, it's a pleasant break from all those price / investment threads and I do hope both falling and rising price speculation will be nipped in the bud from now on.

I must say it's really tasking. Checking that all threads are in check and not breaking any rules. It's really important too so the newbies don't get it all wrong and TRF becomes a joke.
Big ups MODS

If there was any substance to the disparaging allegation that legitimate thread/posts are being deleted then the first thread that would have been deleted is this one.

Instead its here for all to see.

Individuals who push their agenda beyond any reasonable level will unfortunately have to be stopped, that's just the way it is, some people just can't help themselves. If that's the way they want it, that's the way they'll get it.

I will put my question here instead, since I wrote it in a thread that is now closed.

I don't have any agenda, I'm just a member who have enjoyed visiting this forum over the years, and greatly so. I'm just curious/trying to understand why this is such a taboo subject. At least it seems that way.

- I have been a member here since 2009. Does that mean I read each and every thread that is posted on this forum, and at the same time do I comment in every thread? Of course not. One is not forced to read these threads. I don't really care what watch people are wearing today. Does it mean I don't click on a thread like that? No, I sometimes do. :) But I'm not forced to click on it, and I can just move on to the next one that sounds interesting. It's a free choice.

I have to say, that I can't understand why it's not allowed to discuss the current price/availability, so be it up or down. I simply don't get that part of the forum. If it's to protect the forum members, then half of the threads that are posted here should be shut down. I mean, to be franc, most of the threads that are started on a weekly bases are just repetitive things that we have read about here for years and years. Nothing wrong with that, and I still like coming here to brows around to see what new members have to say about their (hopefully) new found interest in watches.

But if a moderator could please take a few minutes and explain why these "what is going on in the market" are such a no go, that would be very much appreciated. And yes, I know there's a sticky thread (but reading the post from 2012, I think things have changed a lot since then).
(edit; as have been pointed out above in this thread already)

After all, aren’t we here to discuss watches? And aren’t the price/availability part of that? At least I think it should be. Personally I find it much more interesting compared to; "what watch are you wearing when you're eating your pizza" etc... but maybe that's just me.

Again, I simply don't get this. :)
-

Thank you.

Cheers,
Joe

Is the price going up?
Is the price going down?
What is the best price?
Is it a good investment to buy now?
We're can I get the best price?
Is it good investment to sell it now?

You can post these type of questions all day, every day about dozens of watches and never get a right answer. Its open to shilling, manipulation, it's boring and it's not really about watches.

Also you get people making crazy rants and discord.
Discussion turns into money discussion not watch discussion.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, Steve. Appreciated.

I would argue that the recent posts has not been about "investment, best price, should I sell now", etc. Rather, it's been a discussion about what is happening in the market. Well informed posts, with people posting information that do actually back up what is happening = not just speculations. Also, if we have a look at some of the threads that were closed, there was real big interest from the forum members. Lots of postings, and lots of people reading. Can't really understand what's wrong with that. If that's not a discussion about watches, then what is it?

Also, if we belive that we can manipulate the current market price on this forum... looking at what is going on in the markets, bitcoin, inflation, less free money out there in society as a whole, those are the things that dictates the price of goods (second hand luxury goods, in this case, watches).

I know I'm just a member, and I don't have any saying what so ever in this matter. But at the same time, what is considered to be boring? Just to give one example; IMHO, I think that the daily "what watch are you wearing doing this and that" is hundred times more boring and it's not really about watches = I can just as easily open google to get the image of that particular model. Also there’s a ton of threads started every week that could just as easily been avoided if one were to use the search function = as a long time member, it can be a bit boring to read about the same questions over and over again (however I do understand why these threads are started since new members arrive to this great forum, which obviously is a good thing. But in comparison, I can't see those threads being closed in the same rigours way).

Again, I fully understand I don't have any saying in this. But just wanted to give my 2 cents. Thanks.

Cheers,
Joe

"I would argue......." well you have actually argued relentlessly but this isn't a place for argument.

Suffice to say I don't accept any of your arguments.

I trust the moderators judgment implicitly to determine what is appropriate and reasonable in all the circumstances.

I'm sorry for my wrong choice of word (English is not my first language). I should have used "I would say...".

But I get your point.

I wish you a nice day.
