Got 5712 - But what to do?

Hi guys,

Just received a 5712 and I´m over the moon! It is a fantastic watch and I can´t take my eyes off it. It´s been my dream for many years…

But…

I also have a Daydate 40 in white gold with the olive dial, and contemplating selling that for either a AP 15500 or a Daytona 116519. My thoughts was that I need a sports watch and not sure if 5712 is rugged enough. And with the Daydate I have two rather delicate watches.

What would you do? What combo would you recommend?

With that said, my next goal is the Aquanaut, so when that time comes, the combo of 5712, 5164 (or 5167) and the Daydate would be fantastic.

A bit torn…

Thanks!

if you want a combo of 5712, 5164/5167 and the DayDate, its probably unwise for you to trade the DD for another watch, no?

That being said, if you want a durable watch, the DD is probably better than the 15500 and maybe equal to the 116519. A Rolex is always durable, irrespective of the model.

Apro or Daytona are great options. Congratulations on the 5712!

I have a 5712 and 5167- great pair. I also had the same day date you have and sold it as I just got bored w it and wasn’t enjoying it. With that said, I wouldn’t say the day date 40 is delicate at all.

a day date isn't any more delicate than a gold daytona and especially not more delicate than a steel RO

swapping the day date for 116519 seems like a sideways/downgrade trade. i would only trade it for a RO but at that point you actually have 2 delicate watches. i think i'd stay where you are personally

5712 is rugged but it only has 60m WR and a snap back.

Something that can be worn in the water without worry would be complementary.

Congrats! I’d keep everything you currently have and make a play/wait on the Aquanaut. If you need a sports watch to hold you over, a Sinn, Seiko, or G-shock would be my choice until the 5167 or 5164 arrives. If you require something more fancy, then a Rolex OP, Explorer, Datejust, Glashutte original seaq, or Blancpain ff would be my choice. But you need the 5167/5164.

You got the 5712 - you’ve already won, it’s all gravy from here on out. 5712 is my grail.

I quickly stopped wearing every other Rolex sports watch in my collection as soon as I got my 5712.

Keep the DD and enjoy your 5712. Great two watch collection.

I have a day date and blue 15500. Keep the day date. Much more comfortable imo, and less “delicate” than AP

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will keep both, and wait for the Aquanaut.

I have a 5712 and 116515 in my collection. I think if I had to sell most and keep 3, it would be these two and the 5164a. I had a day date and its just too heavy...

I’ve had most of those and would swap the DD for the 116519 personally. DD is plenty rugged but it does flash like the 5712 so they have that similar vibe going.

I’d keep what you have, both are icons of both brands. If you want something low key as a beater watch that is still nice, I’d recommend an Explorer 214270. I know it’s boring looking but I swear, I wear it more than my 5712 because it’s so durable and versatile. I feel like after a 15 year watch journey I overlooked the Explorer too many times until my wife got me one as a gift. It’s too boring for a first second or third Rolex but is perfect for the collector who has everything.

When I got my 5711/1A it was basically all I wore for about 12mo and my DD40 got very little wrist time, after about a year the DD fell back into rotation and prob got the most wrist time.... until I picked up a 5167/A haha

If you like the Day Date look but need something more sporty, maybe consider adding a Datejust. One in steel would be a great watch to wear for the few times when you feel you need something more durable and/or less expensive than the 5712. Then if a 5167 becomes available, you can decide on selling the DD or adding the Patek. I most often wear my Pateks and AP, but wear a Datejust when I just don't want to worry about my watch.

AP RO, 5712 and Daytona would be a great trio.

I had an Aquanaut and Nautilus at the same time and found having both a bit redundant. Daytona will probably wear better on a daily basis than the Aqua.

Echoing the comments above, the DD40 is rugged. I have a good friend who has been wearing his DD40 WG as if it's a steel Daytona, going swimming and playing tennis and accumulating lots of scratches on it. He doesn't seem to have encountered any durability issues with the DD40, but I understand you totally when you say that the DD40 doesn't "feel" as rugged as a SS Daytona.

Sell the day date. It is pedestrian by all accounts. If you want a sturdy sports watch to beat up, just get a Rolex steel sports model. If you want something that's actually high-end, get the AP.

Agree to disagree. Platinum DD is not “pedestrian” by any account. I find myself reaching for mine far more than my AP RO’s, nautilii, and aquanaut.
