Stuck crown, any suggestions?

I recently acquired a 16750 that is in need of some TLC. The watch is currently running, but the crown/stem is stuck not allowing me to set the date or time. I removed the bezel, insert, and bracelet for cleaning and they were all very dirty with what appeared to be years of crud built up. I can unscrew the crown, but that's about it.

I plan on sending the watch in for a full service but would love to get any feedback on what's causing the issue and any suggestions on the fix. Apologies in advance if I'm using the wrong nomenclature and thanks in advance for any insight.

The winding crown is made up of a number of different parts which when assembled make up the functional crown/winding stem.

What you have pictured is the outer part (steel outer shell/cap) unscrewed from the crown core. You also appear to be missing the spring which makes the crown "pop" when you unscrew the crown from the case.

The core is attached to the winding stem which is why the stem will now not function as the is no connection between the outer crown and the core/stem. The only fix for what you have is a new/replacement winding crown.

Thank you for the informative reply. Is replacing the winding crown an easy fix or does the case back need to be removed?

Yes. They will take care of it all as part of the service. Where are you sending it?? Because until then it is functionally useless.

I haven't yet decided between a RSC or independent. Do you have any recommendations? Considering I don't have the original paperwork, I like the idea of creating a paper trail with the Rolex service card. I assume that would be important when it comes time to sell it, but maybe I'm mistaken?

I'd recommend a RSC.

The price difference is marginal and you'll have the benefit of the paperwork.

RSC is going to want to fix / replace much more than the crown.

I recommend you deciding on what you want replaced before you bring it in.


FYI a replacement crown and crown tube are part of a routine service.

Thanks Gus. I plan on sending it in for a full service, just need to decide between RSC vs. independent.
