Advice on a 5513 Submariner

As a huge, modern Submariner fan I’d like to now get a vintage.

I’ve got some 5513’s offered to me, and they range from circa 1967 to 1988. The mid 1980’s models are considerably cheaper than the older ones. Would it make more sense to get the younger and cheaper watch and let it climb ? Or are the younger models just not as desirable and never likely to be ?

Any advice appreciated before I make my first ever Vintage acquisition (save for the birth year Datejust I acquired in my naive days and was fleeced on!!!).

It all comes down to the type of dial you prefer. Gilt, matte or white gold surrounds. Prices and desirability decease in that order. Post some photos

Thanks, that makes sense.

Another question if I may : if the bracelet has been replaced and is not the original, is that a significant factor?

Sourcing the correct bracelet for a 5513 won't be difficult. Many owners just slap a 93150 on there for ease of use over the rattly folded-link original...my WGS 'beater' 5513 is on leather all the time anyway!

You can't go wrong with the lesser-priced gloss dial version produced from 1984 until the end of 5513 production. They are fairly reasonable in price and unless you have it under your nose, it could pass for a matte dial version on the wrist. Also, they really pop with the high dome crystal which really accentuates the vintage look.

Nice shots springer! I’d actually go about sourcing the correct strong watch head w a great dial, insert and matching hands. That’s where all the value is. But what you like and wear it on nato, leather, 93150, whatever... that’s part of the fun.

I would look closely at the specific pieces you've been offered. Don't turn down the opportunity to buy a really excellent example regardless of the era. If they're all just "good", then it's purely a matter of taste ... and budget.

I'm skeptical of trying to guess how values will appreciate, but I must confess that I don't see much logic in buying a 1980s version as an investment. It's hard to afford a good gilt dial example, and purchasing them is a minefield, but I have little doubt that an decent gilt-dial 5513 will appreciate better than a gold-surround piece.

It depends how much you can/want to spend. The younger models are cheaper but will climb slower as the old expensive models ;)
