1979 Explorer 1016

Hello All,

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. I have an offer to purchase my grail... a 1979 Rolex Explorer 1016. I would appreciate your opinion on this piece. Looks fine to me but I’m new to the vintage watch game. what do you guys think? Any red flags? Thanks!

Looks good to me and nice domed plexi. Does it come with a bracelet or head only?

That sounds reassuring. Yes, head only deal.

If you get this one:

You might consider having it non-RSC serviced for longevity. (Is there any 'proven' service history?)

If you opt for service (an independent, NOT a RSC) have them NOT change dial or hands or polish it. Then you have a nice vintage piece showing patina and normal wear.

If you go with RSC they will 'want' to replace everything, as a general rule. But you could request . . . . well, good luck.

The serviced watch would not normally require service again for 10 years unless you go diving with it (seal deterioration).

Thanks for the advice. I’d rather keep everything original. Seller says he had it serviced two years ago but he lost the receipt. What do you think would be a reasonable asking price for this watch considering it does not have any papers and bracelet?

I don’t plan on diving with it. This will be my “special occasion” watch

I am no way an expert, but that non-tapering second hand is a bit worrisome. Don’t know about other hands, but that second hand certainly looks like a 3rd party part. Hopefully the experts can chime in.

Yes well spotted. Sweep hand is definitely incorrect.

I believe the handset may be sub hands. Explorer hands are slightly longer - here’s a comparison...my 1016 has the replacement hand set (shorter of the following pics)

Actually the more I look at the watch I’m not sure...angles of pics make it hard.

Compared with mine I would say hands are a wee bit short however it’s a nice looking watch.
Do we know the asking price?

Can someone show me examples of a matte 1016 dial with the same dial fonts?

They text printing and shape different than the others I've seen, especially the SCOC text, and the lume application looks very 'flat.' Might be a variant I haven't seen before and would like to know if it's period correct or a service dial.

The case on this 1016 is amazing. There appears to be zero wear on the case between the lugs.

He is asking a very good price. $8k but that is why I’m a little hesitant, might be too good to be true.

Here's a close up of mine from the early 80s. The thickness of font and font type looks different. Also agree that the second hand should taper.

there are several things about this watch that give me pause, and personally I would walk away. The first red flag is the most obvious... the price. There are more.
