Please me if my Gold Submariner is Vintage

Hi Everyone

I was thinking of selling my Gold Submariner I have had for 17 years which I originally purchased used and realized on searching the internet that there is a wide variety of prices on the internet for similar watches.

I think based on my limited research it is a vintage model and would appreciate any input from this forum in confirming this and advice on the best way forward to preserve it.

Sorry Title should read "Please tell me if my Gold Submariner is Vintage". Cant seem to edit on my end.

Well I never really thought this watch had any special value outside of a regular second hand gold submariners and never really took any special care of of it outside of rarely wearing it.

I was thinking of selling it and buying a SS model but now I am having second thoughts if it has any significant value as a collector's item.

I have never serviced it in the 17 years and have now come to the point where I either sell or service and keep. I am not an avid collector and this is my only watch of value but I am willing to keep it as a heirloom.

I am really looking for confirmation of its value and next steps to verify and/or service it.

Absolutely vintage, and absolutely valuable. Be sure the dial is original and not refinished--I'm not up to speed on the dial variations, but your "Submariner" being shorter than the depth rating line appears to not match the other dials a quick search produced. Not saying it isn't good, but you need to poke around.

What is the serial number?

You may regret it later if you sell or trade . . .

Thank you for your response.

The dial is indeed a worry but I was more focused on the faded spots.

I was reluctant to interfere with the band but got it off safely. The serial number is 388xxxx.

Also on the drsd link you provided, I found a Submariner dial with the Submariner label being shorter than the feet rating line.

Its not a gold version but I am hoping that means it is authentic.

OK guys so assume I decide to keep this.

Should I just get it serviced? what about the spots on the dial, is that a problem that needs fixing?

How about the value, how do I get a number?

Keep it, it's a terrific timepiece. Yes, have it serviced by one of the top independents. Don't do any dial restoration.
To get an idea of the value, go to watchrecon and find "apples to apples" comps. For the most part this site pulls from private sales so you can get a truer sense of the market value.

Think this is the one Rocky buys when he makes his first bit of coin. Fun watch!

All I can add is that I love it!

I also really like the dial as is.

Keep it.

At least you know the history of the Watch.

If you want to sell for a vintage steel model it’s a minefield.

Selling for a new steel model is madness as you’ll pay a premium for something nowhere near as special or you’ll be waiting years to get a new one from an AD.

Service it with a reputable watchmaker and keep it. Don’t change any visible parts! It’s lovely. Rarely seen.

Not the same thing...you need to compare apples to apples. Search blue 1680 nipple dials for the variants.

I will do a more though check to see if I find a dial with comparable lettering.

In the meantime I will make a new thread specifically about that dial to see if any of the experts will chime in .
