That makes a lot of sense - especially the edge where it seems he peeled it a bit before realizing it wasn’t coming off cleanly.

Or he was just drunk and playing around

I had a convo with someone who’s well known in the vintage world. The owner of this PN has been contacted by a number of interested buyers. Asking price is in the 7 figures.

Didn't know that Penn from Penn & Teller was working on the Antiques Roadshow now.

Bet it goes for way more than 700 grand with all the buzz about it.

The sticker means nothing. Could as well have been the sales person or store trying to remove it. Watch looks unworn so why try to find reasons it’s not?

Makes sense. Would make a million at auction any day. Just nice to not have to pay the auction house a hefty fee.

I thought that too at first. I think he's tried to remove the sticker, and its de- laminated taking the top protective layer off which has produced the faded effect. Old caseback stickers had several layers to them.

No doubt he wore it when he first bought it then put it away

Watching the YouTube video again, there's definite wrist cheese on the shot of the inner clasp at 4:11.

https://youtu.be/b9Y4bmbh1KY

That's pretty conclusive.

It's been worn without doubt, but it's still pretty much NOS.

Yeah, 'hardly worn' would be the truth. Anyway, it's 'like new', and a great story. The Dude can afford a decent barber now.

x1000. Only OCD vintage watch hobbyists would pick apart such a great story.

One of many interesting things in this story .... the blank warranty paper. I guess this is the "written" style of paper, as opposed to the punched style, and the military watch store just didn't bother filling it out.

Funny, when I've seen blank or written papers with vintage Rolexes in the past, I would always think "Eh, probably added later, or fake, or filled in later to make it look better .... etc ..." Here's a confirmed authentic case that some watches did indeed come with blank warranty papers.

Exactly.

amazing. Why would he spend 1 months salary on a watch he didn't intend on wearing? I'd like to chat with the interesting man.

This Road Show episode is the second time I have seen Men being surprised by the value of their "Rolex" on this PBS show. I find it ironic that I have something in common with these two men. I wish I could have been surprised to discover my Rolex was worth a huge sum. But, such is Not the case. What we do have in common is we All purchased our Rolex's from a U.S. Military P.X/B.X Exchange Store. I purchased my 5513 Sub in 1965 at the Frankfort,Germany P.X. for $109. I wore my Sub for the the next 50 years. The long story on this watch ? Look under Search, Rocketman39. It's on page 6, Accidental Rolex. It's in the safe now after having been restored to Beautiful condition by Bob and Phillip Ridley of Watchmakers International, Arlington,Texas.

A small comment on his paper work. When I purchased my 5513. I received no Warranty Papers. No Rolex papers of any kind. No Stickers at all. I received the watch,Box and Rolex copper anchor along with a rough paper sales receipt. After about 30 years the Sales receipt fell completely apart. The sales girls in the P.X.'s were usually Wives or Daughters of Service Men.

This story is so widespread even my father forwarded me the story from a friend who sent it to him. ...and my dad (in his 70s) isn’t even into watches,

Now more people are going to think their Rolex watches are worth money. Especially 2-tone DateJust models from the 1970s and early 80s before the disco scene fizzled.

How would he go about cashing in the watch now? Can't imagine he can just walk into a pawn shop and walk out with $650,000 cash.
