1680 RedSub SOS

Guys

I dont know where to begin other than i have felt sick for 3 days since this issue happened.
Last week I managed to get some moisture ingress in my 1680. I opened the crown to allow the moisture escape. Put the watch in my airing cupboard as this is the dryest place in my house. The next morning I checked the watch and to my horror the dial has developed cracks and has lifted of the base almost fouling the hands. Please dont post any responses saying "you shouldnt do that" or words to that effect, I am well aware that I have ruined my pride and joy. I havent taken any pictures as it almost sends me to tears (I know a grown man of 41 years) but its my birth year Red Sub that took me 2 years to source.
My question is, can anyone assist in pointing me to any known sellers who can supply a genuine non refinished Feet First Dial suitable for a 1972 Submariner. I havent looked into the insurance side yet but i want source the replacement parts myself. The rest of the watch is fine, i just need a replacement dial. I am aware these are not the easiest to find and the price will be high.

Can Anyone help me on this?

I would start at the VRF "vintage rolex forum" and place a wtb post. I am sure many of our members will provide good advice on this.

Sorry to hear that...

While it'll cost you, I bet you can source a dial with hard work and persistence.

X2. Additionally, you're watch is not fine. It needs to go into service. I was lucky just last week after finding moisture in my red sub. No damage to the dial or movement, but if I would have waited for any length of time, rust would have developed without me knowing about it. Get it serviced immediately, while looking for a dial and hands.

I am not sure, but maybe RSC can provide you with a dial when presenting the watch to them. I read somewhere that this is possible in some RSCs

Moisture in a watch is an emergency, it must be dried properly and serviced as the water has dispersed the oil and before rust sets in. Sorry to hear your story.

It had been said already that you need to service the watch to avoid further damage.

This goes for the repair, I trust that you will get also a dial, but one main question arises. How did this happen ? Do you know ? Its very important to find out from where the moisture / water got in. If it is a seal or the crystal, you will end up again to point 1. So, trace the weak point and take care.

So sorry to hear this, but yes, please give us the details of how it happened, as painful as it might be. Did you swim with it? Just in the shower? Where do you think the moisture got in? Maybe there's a lesson for others here, although a hard one, of course. It's sad.

Sorry to hear that. As others have mentioned get it serviced first. Sourcing a red sub dial or even a service red sub dial will take time and cost big but sure you will find one eventually. Try contacting Mike Wood in the UK who's a member here too, he might be able to assist. Also try contacting the vintage sellers in the sticky above for sourcing a dial. All the best!

I've read on here that Rsc will replace a damaged red dial with a new service red. Maybe a decent temporary solution while you look for another "correct" dial. Good luck.

Yes, I think a luminova option would do for the time being, this will allow me to take my time on sourcing a nice red dial. The problem I have is finding one in the UK that will allow me to avoid me paying import duties from outside of the EU.
I will be speaking to Rolex RSC (Kent UK) today to see what can be done.

Paul

I don't think the service dials with the red lettering are sold by the RSC anymore, guess it would be a White lettering service dial but still enough to tide over till source an original.

Paul,
What a f@cker, sorry to hear the news. Cannot recommend Bill Rice enough for a service, did a great job on my 1680.

http://www.williamricewatches.com/

Good luck with the replacement dial, I am sure a good one will appear, probably worth waiting for the right ff dial to become available.

Will be in touch re the London GTG as we are down your way from the 10th August.

Best,

Gabriel

Nightmare Paul so sorry to hear this

Rolex UK will replace a red dial with a red lumi dial but its now £1500 + cost of service so don't expect any change out of £2500
