Its certainly worth considering, if I couldnt source an original Red Dial the the luminova would be the way forward for me. I may keep the destroyed dial and see what happens in the future. I had heard that Rolex uk RSC could offer luminova Red dials but the price was significantly higher than a normal service dial. I didnt want to empty the repair fund and then miss an opportunity later on. luckily the gamble paid off for me. I know Jason here on TRF has one of each, he did post a shot of them side by side

Just need to find a NOS fat font insert for £50 and I am fully sorted

Glad you found one Paul......and it looks to be a real beauty........

In relation to the so called Mark VIII luminova Red Sub dial......this is a great shot from DoubleRedSeadweller .......

The main difference apart from the lume is the wider Submariner wording - similar to the White Sub 1680.

Most of the ones I've seen are like Subking's which have SWISS at 6 O'clock......this one has the old Tritium wording for some reason

If its gonna stay in the family I would try to restore the dial and this sad story would be part of the history of the watch.

For future value you can then surch for a correct dial without stress.

Good Luck!

Glad to hear this is likely to have a good ending - makes me think about my own 1680 though - have taken it into the pool a few times in the past but might not from herein! Probably best as a 'dry land' watch!

crappy phone shot taken on the fly, will get the DSLR out later

Thanks for all the kind words, help and advice, it has proved invaluable. The whole process cost me in the region of a used 16610. So my advice would be to get a 16610 as the beater and keep the vintage out of harms way.
