I agree. Fake story.

Why mention Karma? If this story is true (which I doubt), the new owner bought it in good faith. Seems Karma was on his side already if you want to be like that.

I’ve thought more on your point and can see that’s a possibility. That is, until the Kyle in the story comes to the table with Hodinkee (watch in hand).

This would be for the benefit of verification under an independent lens. Someone like HQHamilton’s best watchmaker.

Now, let’s move to another angle. Say the watch is real. But is the story? If I wanted my “15 minutes of fame”, I could buy any pawn shop perished Rolex and craft a similar unverifiable tale. So Folex may prevail at more than one level.

Not being negative, just circumspect.

Could also be that the story was contrived for the purpose of getting some publicity for Hodinkee - hoping that the press would pick up the story and publish it all over the www. Not saying they would do that, but I think I have seen similar stories picked up and widely distributed - like a kid finding a huge diamond or something.

If so it’s kind of a lame attempt. Hodinkee is already pretty well-known among people who read watch sites on the internet, and the story of a 10 dollar Rolex isn’t that interesting to the general public to merit anything other than a passing glance among the many other clickbait headlines. And the risk for losing all credibly if caught doesn’t seem to be worth the tiny gain they may get from the story. And if the average non-WIS clicks on the Hodinkee site for this story, I doubt they’ll be so entranced by ‘Talking Watches with Roger Smith’ that they’ll keep coming back.

The guy who had the watch may be making this up though- I have absolutely no idea. But crazier things either way have happened.

There are very, very dumb people out there and others that just have no interest or don't have a clue about watches. In Germany, we had a neighbor over for drinks and I had just seen the results of the Paul Newman auction and mentioned it and she asked,"What is a Rolex?"

This is a solid middle-class lady in her '70s with a nice house. I assumed everyone knows what a Rolex is with name recognition similar to Coca-Cola.

Good article if it's true If all somehow checked out afterwards with the watch it's a good thing he didn't send it to Rolex... Wouldn't want to have it "restored" by them as it would lose so much character in my eyes.

Whether true or not, entertaining if nothing else. Brings me to a point I’ve been wanting to share. I may be the beneficiary of such a watch. Long story but if it happens, I will certainly let all of you know. If I’m able to obtain the watch it will be with bitter sweet circumstances as you all can imagine. I will find out more this coming month as I talk with my dear old friend. I’m not even sure what reference it is. I believe he told me he purchased it new in 1975 for 320.00 he sent me a picture of it.

And yet some are surprised when a "deal" is found on EBAY and ends up in the Watchout section
