If only Rolex could make a watch to wear everyday.....

Just read this in a Time and Tide article -
EVENT: 7 watches spotted at the launch of the Ferrari Portofino in Byron Bay, inc. IWC, Creux Automatiq and Rolex

“You could get a Rolex or an IWC and spend a lot of money, but I just wanted a watch I could wear every day.” - Glenn Butler (big wig entrepreneur in Australia) on why he chose a Shinola.

Note: this is not to demean Shinola. They have there place in the watch world. Actually, I like many of the face designs, just too big of a watch for my liking.

I know exactly what they mean. All new Rolex are like high polished jewelry. All of them. Some more then others of course. IMO that’s why there is so much division over whether the old references are better. They don’t look like jewelry. Some Rolex fans don’t seem to like the “jewelry” look. I can understand that. I like both.

I recently purchased my wife a Shinola on a whim while we were on our honeymoon. I was moderately impressed with their finish and ability to easily customize. Their leather straps also seemed to be of good quality, the bracelets were another story. Unfortunately we only had the watch at home for a month before the quartz movement had issues. It was all covered under warranty and our local AD handled the shipping to and from Shinola.

I still have mixed feelings regarding the brand. I think it's been completely dispelled that these watches are "made in the USA," which is why I think a lot people felt they were being original in purchasing from Shinola.

I think everyone is misinterpreting the message, I think it means a cheap one he does not have to worry about beating up, but he does worry about harming expensive ones.

I’ve had a Shinola for about two years and I’m perfectly happy with it. A simple Runwell model, black dial and leather strap, it lives up to its name.
Sure, it’s only assembled in Detroit but they are a US company, they operate in the city and employ local residents, that’s good. They have other fine products and cool shops in TriBeCa and Soho. And my wife likes hers too! There’s a lot of room for everyday watches, Rolex being one of the more expensive brands.

I get what he's saying... But that's what these watches are designed for. I've worn my watches around the world and back. Now if he would have said something like why can't Patek make a Calatrava that I can wear in every situation I would support that.

That’s what Casio and Timex is for.
Rolex is an everyday watch, it all boils down to
what are you going to do with your hands?
Depending on vocation or extra curricular activities...
Is one going to dress up maybe wear a suit and wear
a Casio or Timex ? They could or they could wear a Rolex
and complete the wardrobe.

I really don’t think the question was proposed correctly.
When you say everyday, every different person has a different
lifestyle and meaning of everyday. You can’t just throw
everyone into the same pot of stew and throw some
witch hazel into it and call it a day ... It doesn’t quite work that way .

If I had billions lying around in one of my offshore account, I will be wearing RM daily and change to a Patek as a beater while washing my Bugatti. Or maybe RM is more durable for that chore.

Rolex’s have been tested in more harsher conditions than he’ll probably put them through. Rolex makes an everyday watch line it’s Tudor, but I wouldn’t hesitate to wear any Rolex everyday. Unless it was a rainbow bezel

I don't think anyone missed the simple message which is that he's a tight wad and that's why he's got money. It sounds more like what goes with shinola than shinola.

Most people who wear Rolexes buy them because they want a nice quality watch and one that suits their tastes. Those people wear that watch every day and don't dream about which one they are going to buy next. The people on this forum are collectors and watch nuts and watches for many is a hobby. The vast majority of Rolexes sold go on an arm and get worn every day for years.

If someone doesn’t think they can wear any Rolex everyday then they’ve either never owned a Rolex or have a mental barrier to wearing something expensive for fear of harming it. It certainly isn’t the watch...

Glenn Butler – Shinola Runwell Sport 48mm
Why this one?
It was a divorce present to myself. I wanted to mark my divorce in a positive way. Like it was the start of a new life. Life could be about me again. I could be selfish. A friend alerted me to the brand, and when I saw it, I thought: I’ve got to have one of those. The whole American manufacturing story; it’s from Detroit and I’m a car guy, so the whole Detroit going bust thing made me sad, but the fact that they’re investing in handcrafted watches was just fantastic. You could get a Rolex or an IWC and spend a lot of money, but I just wanted a watch I could wear every day. I walked into the shop in Detroit and looked at all of them, and I just said, “I want that one.”

Wore my 1680 sub for more than 20 years as my lone watch. It wasn't until I finished my training and began making more money that I was able to add more to my collection so to me the sub is a perfect daily watch.
