Tropical Dial Question, Definitely Not Kosher

Stumbled across this the other day -

Beautiful, right?

Thing is, it’s FORTY THOUSAND DOLLARS. Which I’d understand, maybe, if it was a 1680/8. But it’s a 16808. For that type of money, I’d definitely go the 1680/8 plexi route.

(For perspective, HQ sold a NOS stickered 16808 earlier a few months ago for low 20s)

Realistically, what is the likelihood that a current non tropical 16808 would turn tropical? Is there anything to be gleaned from the serial? Could one - ahem - just go swimming in the ocean with the crown unwound to achieve something similar?

I understand some premium for this type of thing but this degree of premium is a bit nutty.

Tropical is a widely used term. Imho brown gold dials turn purple. This just look water damaged to me but each to their own. If someone likes this and want to pay for it so be it.

The tritium in the nipple hour plots doesn’t tell a water damage story. They seem amazingly good compared to the dial paint. That does suggest some “out of midcase” manipulation.

But the price is a wholly separate matter...borderline insanity perhaps?

Yeah the dial almost looks etched away, like with acetone or rubbing alcohol or something

What is the going rate for 16808s these days anyway? Someone please confirm for me that this price is indeed crazy.

Also - how would a dial ever become tropical and the case not be simultaneously beat to shit?

Not a fan of tropic dials and that price is robbery.

I saw a similar dial on a rooter GMT up for sale this week. Could not make out the dial writing. Was thinking it was the pics, but seeing this it was very similar.

Trying to see if i can remember where it was and will post link.

The dial does look as though there was some moisture invasion, even though the nipples look clean. Or as was said earlier some kind of manipulation of the dial occurred. It definitely looks nice, but the price does seem way over the top.
