Trip to Milan (advice requested)

I just booked a trip to Milan for a few days in mid-November. Never been to Italy before.

This is a very quick business trip.

Redeye Saturday night into Sunday morning. Free Sunday and Monday. Meetings Tuesday, and back home on Wednesday.

Never even figured on a trip like this happening. So I am a little caught off guard.

My hotel is being booked for me. But I will be a fish out of water. Any thing I should see in the short time I have? Anything I should be wary of?

Watch related, I have had zero concerns going to Mexico, Chicago, NYC or anywhere else. I do think I recall some kind of warnings about Italy though. And considering I will not know the language at all, all of the sudden, I am thinking about it.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

I’ve not been to Milan, but in the places I’ve been English was widely spoken. I doubt that Milan is any different.
I can’t comment about how safe it is in Milan, but I assume it’s like any other big city. Be reasonably careful and aware and you’ll likely be fine.

Make sure to bring a nice watch otherwise you´ll be the only guy in Milan without one.

If you have time DaVinci‘s Last Supper fresco is there, worth the visit. Its behind a small church so ask beforehand how to get there.
Great city and but use common sense when touring. Stay clear of the gypsies, do not let them get real close to you.

Trip to Milan (advice requested)

Double post
I’m in Florence now and I’ll be in Milan in a few days.
No issues and great food, weather and wine. So far so good

Great pasta

I lived in the the mIlan area for 5 years and I think the crime situation has worsened. I'd be wary and take all necessary precautions especially in public places.
Try to be near Downtown. The biggest draw for tourists is the Galleria, and Cathedral. Bit late to book tickets for the opera but maybe worth trying to find some cancelled tix. If you like medieval art go check out Davinci's the last supper.
Via Monte Napoleon is the fashion center of Milan and worth a walkabout.

In large cities across Europe, many speak English. When you get out in more rural areas, it's a little different. In a large, crowded city, pick pockets would probably be the biggest issue. Personally, I only wear my Timex Ironman outside of the US (sometimes in the US depending on where I'm going). I also like to just wonder around and look at things with the "occasional" stop a bar or three and usually end up in a sketchy part of town at some point. It's just one less thing to worry about.

I can’t agree with that statement. I’ve been to Italy once a year for the last 5-6 years and I can tell you that it is not just “safe”. There are areas to avoid especially in Milan and there are criminals operating the streets. A lot of scammers will approach you and distract you while others steal your belongings.

I’m not saying it’s Brazil but I’m wouldn’t walk around with a $20k watch simply because it’s safe. It’s not.

Thinking my trusty omega SMP will likely be perfect for this trip.

Duomo in city center, Lake Como, drive down to Marinello to see Ferrari museum.... so many wonderful choices. If you had a longer lead-time, you could also see The Last Supper too painted on the wall of a church.... Many, many things to see and do!

Given current situation in Europe, would leave expensive mechanical timepieces at home. Or wear it knowing it may be stolen and the situation surrounding that. Your call.

Ask them to book you a hotel close to the domo, Armani/mandarin/Park Hyatt.

Great watch shopping here. Send me a text/call will be back in NJ on Friday.

Wearing my ss skydweller right now. AP and Rolex boutiques are really nice. It’s safe, just pickpockets etc.

You need not worry in Milan.

Enjoy, and eat until you burst!

Seth, notice it's US members telling you it's unsafe, us EU members telling it is safe.

I will definitely do that. Once I know where I am staying, I will have a little more of an idea of what I can and can't do.

Thanks for the offer!!!

They are massive WIS in Italy so you will hopefully see plenty about. The PP will be fine there. I’m told by my Italian colleagues that northern Italy, esp. Milan is more like Germany then the rest of Italy. Love the country, have an amazing time !!! Next summer lake como is on our list.

Always happy to help cuz I've been in Italy more times than I care to count. If you do go to Lake Como and want to go to Bellagio, pay extra for the fast boat trust me.

Ferrari is a must see for sure......not to far away but about 2 hours out....then you could also go to Monza, where the F1 Circuit/track is....many days there are cars testing there so you could see some really interesting machines. If you get stuck with the language, text me or even call me and pass the phone over as I am very fluent in Italian....bring home some balsamic as the region you are visiting is popular for that, and try to bring back a bottle of the extra virgin olive oil, its out of this world. Have fun my friend!!

It’s safe as long as you’re careful, just like anywhere else. Pickpockets are around like any other city. Eat, drink and enjoy.
