I tried it on yesterday. Very nice piece! My AD said they were going to get 5 and the last one is in the case.

Seiko SLA017 -- the first diver

Does anyone feel that the waffle strap was the right combo for this watch as compared to the tropic strap?

I got an NOS tropic strap and I didn't bother to put it on anymore as it's too thin, the buckle has some sharp edges. I feel the waffle strap that comes along with the watch is perfect!

The stock strap is fine, but the watch comes alive on a nato.

Can't recall if I've posted this comparison between my 5 digit Sea-Dweller and Sub No Date. Unscientifically, the Seiko falls nicely in between the 16660 and the 14060M in height and feel on the wrist. The case finishing is excellent, and it's keeping +1spd or better without any additional adjustment. Considering the price, this watch is the best Seiko diver I've owned, even compared to my GS diver.

Nice picture comparison! I want to add that the lug design is a contributing factor towards this watch versatility on various straps. Thanks for sharing and answering my query.

I agree, the provided waffle strap is perfect. I was thinking of getting the rubber strap from the MM to put on there sometimes just to change it up. Perhaps a NATO, too.

Looks terrific on that gray NATO. I've put mine on a vintage tropic strap. Really suits the watch IMO and really comfortable. The diamond strap was great too but this is thinner, shorter and more vintage feeling. I'm really having a lot of fun with this piece. Feel lucky to have it.

Thanks DCheeta. As shared in the other post, if there is something I would change in the existing strap it is to add another tab to hold securely the long strap.

Thank you Megan for posting this most excellent review......I'm now very chuffed
PS I'd heard that bezel insert is ceramic, I figured it was aluminum laquered to a high gloss like the one on the marine master 300.....good to get all the right info

PS....one of the reasons I dig & get chuffed is that it has LUG HOLES....they are sacrosanct

Hi there! I hope all is well....and thanks.

I'm sort of "the nato guy" as this is actually my first Perlon. I think it suits the watch and is "period correct".

Decided to keep my SLA017. After just two days of wearing it, it's ruining me for Rolex. I'm wearing my Explorer right now and I cannot believe my ambivalence towards it.

Last night I charged the SLA's lume for a couple seconds with a bright Fenix LED flashlight I have. I then sat it on the windowsill about 10+ feet away from my bed and two hours later I could still see the lume with no problem. I couldn't believe it. I'm pretty sure the writing is on the wall for my Exp.

A Seiko overthrowing a Rolex? That would be quite the coup d'état! I know what you're saying though, the SLA017 is stealing a lot of wrist time from my other watches too. Just be careful not to make any rash decisions until after the honeymoon period ends. The Explorer is a solid watch to have around.

Coup d'état indeed, but point taken. This is my first dive watch, first Seiko, and first time having multiple nice watches, so I should definitely be careful. But I'm also getting better at knowing myself, and my suspicion is that the Explorer won't stay (for multiple reasons, if I'm honest). But I won't rush any decision and see how this plays out.

One thing's for sure though, at least at the moment I guess: I want the MM300 now more than ever.

One thing I've now learned is that I'm sucker for great lume. It's the one (only) area where I've been disappointed with my Explorer. It makes me want the PAM000 even more now, too, since they're known to have great lume.

And here I thought I was a thinner, smaller watch kinda guy ... though I do still fancy the BB 36.
