I agree with the member who cited McIntosh.

I started to use McIntosh gears 30 years ago.

Here is my main system. I also have slim line gears where I build model kits and restore vintage slot cars and another tuner (MR 80) close to my bed that I use with Grado 1000 hear speakers.

Just like Rolex, you sometimes (once every 10 or 15 years) have to maintain by changing some components.

I have also been using Leica cameras and optics for 35 years (R3Mot, CL, M4P, IIIC, 2xM6, M9, M-P 240) and would agree to associate the quality with the one of Rolex, exception being made to my M9. The first digital cameras were not that good. Now, I'm fully satisfied (or the time being) with my MP-240 (in a rare execution: Olive green safari).

From my own experience: Rolex, Seiko, Bose, Shure, Red Wing boots, Victorinox. Just to name a few super durable brands.

I love my Vitamix! Like my watches, it cost a bit more than other mixers... and like Rolex, it can be reliably used everyday with phenomenal results!

Great thread!!! This is what I look for in all things I purchase and have tried to instill this in my kids. Buying cheap stuff costs a lot more over time than buying correctly the first time.

Here are a few:

Saddleback leather

Restoration hardware stuff

Wusthof knives

Sage fly rods

Eley hose reels

Honda and Yamaha motors - marine and otherwise.

Ecco shoes - comfortable too

Allen Edmund shoes - less comfortable but I have a few pair that are 20 plus years old.

Id agree with Mcintosh. I’d add Bryston amplifiers and Michell turntables. All capable of lasting a liftime.

Billingham camera bags too, ive had mine years and its still in tip top condition. Lovely!

Great thread..... there are a few British brands that just have not needed to change with the decades, and remain a great price/quality decision, with future resale good to avoid 'taking a bath' ( or better still pass down the family)..... Barbour, Loakes, Harris tweed, Hardy fly gear, Morgan cars to select a few. Many have fallen victim to large multinationals taking over the company just for the brand followed by overuse and dilution - Rolls Royce, Bentley, Land Rover in the car world but many other examples in most industries ......
Not forgetting that Rolex was for a good period of time, resident in London. Excuse my patriotism -strange for an ex-pat abroad, but we are all perhaps a little vain and romantic about our mother countries...

I've had to replace two sets of bathroom fawcetts from Restoration Hardware. $1300 for two. Corroded within two years. Cheap plating doesn't hold up. They do replace them for free and I have gotten good at some plumbing.
Walk through a showroom and look closely at the many brass lamps and mirrors. You will see the finish tarnishing.
Most of their products are indeed made in China. Cheap junk.
The furniture holds up well, generally, but as mentioned, most is made in China of dubious materials.
My new couch smelled strongly of chemicals when first delivered. Now it's just killing me more subtly.

For watches, I could name some few less regarded brands that IMO and experience are in the same league of quality compared to Rolex.

For other brands that I've had very good experience and satisfaction in terms of quality, I would mention:

Apple
Bang Olufsen for Home Audio
Leica (Already had a little issue but no huge deal)

And for the last, I believe people will laugh about, but it worth mentioning:

I am VERY impressed how my Panasonic Fridge, still solid as brick, is resisting an intense use without any problem after many years.
The same goes for my KOMECO Gas Heater (a Brazilian manufacturer). (Here we use piped gas system)

Seeing your photo made me think of Rainbows...but only the old USA made pairs. Have some 20+ years old ones that still look brands new vs. the China made ones they sell now that last a few years max.

Another vote for Filson gear as well.

Maybe it is now, but I bought a bedroom set in the late 1990s that is dove tailed cedar, through and through, made by Michael’s (which I believe RH bought), that is bullet proof. I googled it and it appears that this was made in the states. At least it was back then.

Even if it was made in China or Thailand or wherever, it was made to last a lifetime. I have a dining room set too, that I love just as much and it’s just as beautiful. Also, an old fashioned metal fan that we got for a wedding gift back in 2000. This thing sits in our garage, on my tool bench and runs pretty much full time in Florida, with the heat and humidity. Never a hiccup. Again, it’s old, so I don’t know where it was made, but I’ve had stuff collapse from the heat in my garage. This thing just keeps on humming. If this stuff is crap, I’d like to see the good stuff. :)

Tools. Agree Snap On wins. However, Craftsman has been a solid brand and has a lifetime warranty. Will see how/if that continues now that Stanley owns the brand.

Timbuk 2 bags.

Benchmade knives

Mephisto shoes

Mont Blanc pens

Saint Laurent boots have been through hell and back and still look brand new. Heck, Toyota cars are one of the most reliable things I can think of. Haven't had one in a while but I remember just like my lexus it lasted so many years.

I have a buddy that has a pair he thinks are 10-12 years old, that’s what made me grab a few. Best flip flop i have ever had but i doubt they last anywhere near as long as they used to.
