Yikes! That's insane. There are some great ADs out there that won't make you go through all that. Still, reading these forums has me thinking great ADs are more rare than common.

I like the whiter dial of the J and yellow gold better in general. I have both yellow and pink/rose/red gold watches (the latter because few make yellow gold watches these days, although it will come back) and I generally prefer yellow, as it is easier to match with other gold tones and it's the color of pure gold. The J is also less expensive than the R, although resale nullifies that, although that could change in time.

Calatrava 5196: R or J?
I purchased the J after the same dilemma between R or J. Ultimately chose J as it looked better with my skin tone. Although the R is beautiful as well.

I have the R... I chose it because of the availability at the time, ore owned. The rose gold isn’t too rosy... nothing like Rolex’s rose gold. I’m not much help other than both are beautiful. I chose rose because at the time, it was available and I’d read great things. In dim lighting, at dinner, the rose turns a yellowish red in dim light, that makes the piece sparkle nicely. You cannot go wrong with either. I’d go with whichever is priced more modestly. My R version doesn’t look overly rosy, as said. It’s the dressiest watch I own and it wears much larger than a 37 mm.

Think J is easier for most people to pull off.

I have a 5120 j that I wear w jeans sometimes and also with more formal attire. I don’t wear it often b/c I have several other pieces. I just wore it yesterday and I thought “ this is one of my least expensive timepieces but is one of my very favorites- a classic that I never get tired of” I love the way the case has kind of a knurling around the bezel. You might consider one of these. Less expensive and easily sourced.

Go with the rose. Very distinctive from yellow.
