I guess this explains the shortage on a localized level...

Looks like our local AD may be trying to get into the gray market...

https://huntsville.craigslist.org/jw...714213439.html
https://huntsville.craigslist.org/jw...722914753.html
https://huntsville.craigslist.org/jw...705836041.html
https://huntsville.craigslist.org/jw...705834276.html (GMT Hulk - LOL)

To clarify...I'm not saying it is them directly or they are even aware of this, but they are clearly not doing anything to prevent blatant flipping by the looks of these ads, especially if the seller is offering to meet at the AD. The title was intended to be tongue-in-cheek.

I just thought it was ironic, that's all.

This is why Rolex screwed up bigtime. There would be a tonne of this happening everywhere. I bet most the online sales are from ADs pretending to be a gray dealer or an individual.

The lure of a quick buck is strong. Everyone is in it to make money. Might as well take advantage of the bubble while it lasts.

There is only one in Huntsville, AL that I know of, although I've never purchased from them. I'm not saying it is them directly or they are even aware of this, but they are clearly not doing anything to prevent blatant flipping by the looks of these ads, especially if the seller is offering to meet at the AD.

It just kind of rubbed me the wrong way...

What scam are they running ? I assume they are selling them as LNIB with a previously named warranty card? If truly BNIB from their AD, I suspect this won’t end well for them.

Didn’t understand the post, I guess a flipper is the seller, not necessarily the AD.

I don’t get the OP. There is no evidence that those CL ads have anything to do with a Rolex AD.

I just thought it was ironic all watches were posted on the same day with roughly the same description about 80% stickers remain, cash only and meet at the local AD.

OP said this "explains the shortage on a localized level." Indeed, if a single flipper is getting new stock from the only AD in the region to mark up and sell on CL, then the regular customers of that AD can't get those pieces at retail. That contributes to scarcity in the area. It doesn't take a rocket scientist of a salesperson to realize the same person continually buying hot models might be up to something, especially since the stock is right there on CL for all to see. And ESPECIALLY if the hand off is happening right at the dealership. If we are kind enough to assume it's not the AD directly selling these, or at least getting a piece of the action, then the sales agents are either willfully myopic or hopelessly clueless.

Yes, and another says to pick up at local Huntsville dealer. Yet another said purchased from local AD. This certainly lends to the appearance the AD may be complicit in this.

Maybe if we let them know we're on too then we can get all of those pieces at retail?

Ok let me play devil’s advocate here
1- what in the ad points that those watches are bought from that AD let alone sold by him?
2- how many people really buy a $10k watch off of Craig’s list?
3- really how big is Huntsville and how many watches does that AD get to cause the current shortage???
4- if this is what one AD is doing, how will it explain the shortage everywhere else??

Having said all of that, I am 100% sure some ADs run shady business by “forcing” customers to bundle, selling direct to grey dealers.... etc. but honestly if that Huntsville AD is selling directly on Craigslist then this is the dumbest move ever!!! Since he would be asking for trouble!!

1) Nothing, just an assumption I made.
2) I would think very few, which is why I can't understand listing them there.
3) Small town, fairly small WIS scene, but there are 10-20 of us who have meet-ups. Obviously this has nothing to do with a worldwide shortage, which is why I said it may explain why our local AD never has any stock (assuming these even came from there).
4) See above, it doesn't...

Again, I just came across this while searching around CL and it just seemed kind of ironic. If anything, it is a nice break from discussing showering and travelling with your Rolex.

I probably would’ve posted the same thing to be honest! Maybe I’m just trying to convo be myself that ADs haven’t reached that new level of low! But I guess some of them already have

Even if that is true Rolex have made it very clear they do not want ADs selling to flippers and they want some screening done so they should still be in trouble with Rolex.

I would report this to Rolex. Maybe this is the only AD for miles around so they feel like they can do anything they like.

This is not new, in 2016 ADs selling to greys and splitting profits and all sorts was rampant after Brexit and largely why the UK was dry so quickly and still continues to be, it got so bad sleepy Rolex had to intervene and punish ADs, sometimes unfairly who had sold in good faith to good customers who turned flipper, to send the message to all ADs that this was not tolerable, and now they all behave.

I am just wondering if this is a sign that even the grey dealers dont want to hold too much stock anymore. that's why AD now need to sell their hot models to the public above msrp instead.

If you had ever spent any significant time in Huntsville you would realize any of this is possible.

I have lived in HSV for 55 years. Don’t know the OP. That dealer sold 10 plus years ago. Since then I haven’t made a transaction there. Knowing some of the people there, what I can’t get my head around is that dealer allowing anyone to do a deal like these under their roof without some benefit.

Huntsville is the fastest growing city in Alabama. In the next 8 years Huntsville is forecast to become the largest city in Alabama. In the last year housing costs in my neighborhood have exploded by around 50-60 percent. Riding around you see licence plates from all over the US. Traffic thru the local airport has exploded. I would expect the potential customers base for high end jewelry in Huntsville to be bigger than one would expect.

What I don’t understand is who the seller sees as his market via Craigslist. Then again, it is Huntsville, we seem to have an abundance of arrogant crazy people here.

why in the world would an AD do this and sell on craigslist? its craigslist... as in the same place you get a used couch with cigarette burns and beer stains all over it, for $2.50.

That would be strike 1, strike 2 and strike 3, you’re out with Rolex. (That’s a baseball/World Series reference). This AD can’t be that clueless.
Or is being used or setup.
