More pics from my weekend

First one was a tricky one to identify as the colour is all wrong. It's a slender-billed gull, probably discoloured with iron oxide.

This is one of my favourites, a graceful prinia on song. For such a small bird they certainly have a loud voice.

Last is a turnstone. I'd been hoping to get a decent shot of one and I was happy with this one.

Another set of beautiful birds, Adrian. Who would have thought the desert could produce such wildlife.

It's a Nikon D200 with a 300mm 2.8VR lens and Nikon TC-20E II X2 converter. Most of my shots are done from my car, steadying the camera on the window frame. The turnstone was done by steadying the camera on the sea wall.

The hardest part is being able to get close enough to take a shot. I usually try to creep close in my car. Sometimes if I stay stationary long enough the birds will land close to me, any movement scares them off. You also need to be observant and know where to look for certain birds. For instance I now know of two locations where the graceful prinia can usually be seen so that takes a lot of work out of the equation. A friend of mine stays for hours in one location and gets some awesome shots. I don't know if this link will work but here's one to one of his shots.

A working link can be found on post #10

I spoke to Juhani, the guy who took the picture and he gave me permission to show it here.

Top shot from Juhani, Adrian.
I don't like to pigeon-hole nations, but why is it that the Finnish are so bloody brilliant at bird photography?... they win all the wildlife photo competitions.

btw: more great shots yourself, Adrian. I'm still waiting for my 300/2.8 VR ... hopefully nice mr Utting at Warehouse Ex will be phoning me very soon. Your photos aren't doing my patience any good at all.

cheers
Andy

I let Juhani use my lens once, he only had for less than 30 mins but came up with a cracking shrike shot. It must be in their genes.

Picture taken several years ago on 35mm Canon T90 with Tamron 90mm lens One of my Eagle Owls had to give them all up,but she is still doing well down the owl sanctuary.Image scanned from 35mm negative into computer, and reduced in size.

African Eagle again scanned from 35mm neg and resized for
forum.Del was a large bird but very tame, used to give talks
about raptors at local schools and flew Del quite regular. He
died about 3 years ago down at the sanctuary.
