Western Union

Intuition tells me NO, but here is the scenario. Prospective buyer wants to send money via Western Union. My initial thought is wire transfer ONLY. I feal both PayPal & Western Union can somehow end up in a scam. Espically since the inquirer has no forum history. Would you guys say only accept wire or am I being difficult?

Thanks

I think WU is pretty straightforward. You walk in with a transaction number and ID, you walk out with cash. If you are receiving money, I'm not sure how you can be scammed.

Easily and there is not a chance I would ever use that service to move money.

Anyone insisting on WU is out to scam. Bank to bank transfer should be your only option for this type of buyer, barring F2F.

At one time there was a massive scam going on with fake Western Union money orders that were deposited and immediately sent. When the funds were not there the transaction was reversed.

Bottom line is each seller has to decide how much they are willing to risk in this environment of being able to transfer money through legitimate means, not questionable ones.

Do this or forever hold your peace IF you somehow get burned. Risks are just not worth it. This forum is filled with horror stories of [sometimes very subtle] scams.

Scams and scammers are constantly evolving. Why risk accepting any form of payment that has been known to be problematic in the past. The lack of flexibility from the buyer side is cause from concern and should raise red flags.

Plus if you have to physically go to western Union and use funds from your bank acct. You can physically go to your bank and do the same transaction via wire. As Beshannon stated above, there have been Western Union scams in the past.

Lots of answers, but not a single explanation of how I could walk out of a WU location with cash in my hand and yet somehow still be getting "scammed."

I don't get it.

Sure if you can walk out with cash and then ship the watch. But this knumbnut wants to deposit the funds via WU to sellers bank. Clear scam attempt

Here's some good reasons to avoid WU for any other transaction

I understand what you are saying. A Seller receiving payment can't really get scammed (as long as the watch was NOT shipped before payment is in hand), but a buyer certainly could....

Ah, well that makes more sense. I wasn't understanding that from the original post. I thought he just meant the buyer was sending him a WU payment that he would pick up at a WU location.

It's a shady company, regardless. Even if I was 100% sure that a deal involving WU was legit, I'd still pass.
I'd rather not contribute to a company that is complicit in worldwide money laundering (which funds organized crime and terrorism to a large degree). YMMV...

I'll just leave this here.

It’s been years, but I also think the fees charged by WU, would be far greater than bank to bank transfer. They take a pretty good chunk....

Bank transfer can cost as little as $10 if not in any hurry.
