The patek 5196 rose gold is a piece I’m provepoleged to have ... I’d recommend this or a stainless steel reverso. The 5196 can be found for great deals pre owned and wears much larger than a 37mm ... having no date window means one less thing to break. For the money, no piece surpasses a reverso. The reverso should cost 4x what it goes for pre owned. In my opinion. In any case, as for gold and reds watches, I feel the 5196 in rose surpasses all dress watches in existence. Only one whom wears one would understand this.

I’m interested as well. I find Lange not to be overly appealing despite its finishing etc. Breguet certainly looks the part of a dress watch with a storied history and a romantic flair but they don’t seem to be appreciated. Their resale value aside, I thought their mechanical rep was pretty solid again. Not quite JLC but well built and starting to innovate once more.
Am I out of touch? Are they second class ( within the tier we are discussing)?

Those recommending against a Patek at this price point, why is that exactly? I have seen plenty of lightly used 5119s selling well under 15k, and a few 5127s as well. I wish the latter had a see through back tho.

Breguet are definitely on par with Patek and Lange. You're right, they get little appreciation for some reason, even though they have fantastic finishing, movements and complications.

In car terms, Patek is Ferrari. Everyone knows them and it's the establishment pick in the segment (can do no wrong and is a media darling). Lange is McLaren. The new-ish company (albeit with a disjointed past) that is receiving a ton of praise and media attention. Breguet? Breguet is Bugatti. A traditional company that is certainly on par (if not exceeding in certain respects) with it's competition...but...receive relatively little media attention. They are not well known by non-enthusiasts and within the enthusiast community, receive undue criticism for being owned by a parent (Swatch and VW).

I think it has more to do with their history than being part of Swatch. Last mid century when Vacheron, AP and Patek were on top Breguet must only have produced a handful watches, I never see any vintage Breguet wrist watches aside from a few great pieces showing up once in a while. I feel they were very inconsistant for many many years.

Then you have the off-beat picks, like picking up a vintage perpetual from AP. Seems like you're asking for trouble come servicing time though.

Curious, what reference did you have in mind for a perpetual vintage AP?

Talking my own book I would add the Patek 3998P for consideration.

Basic three-hand 34mm Calatrava w date from the late 1990s / early 2000s w Cal 315. Picked it over both the 5196R/G and 5296R/G which wear too large for my taste and wrist size (certainly larger than the nominal 37mm and 38mm, respectively). The 3998P might stretch the budget but the 3998G will be attainable for 15k in great condition w box and papers.

Another piece I like very much within the 15k budget is the Bauhaus-inspired Patek 5000G w Cal 240 micro rotor movement.

IWC may be worth looking at. Can get good deals on used ones too.

Great thread. Thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts. I wonder in 2022 pricing...

Still 1815 (barely in price range now) and JLC MUT (comfortably so in steel) for me

My vote goes to either the Vacheron Constantin Traditionelle (white gold or rose gold, whichever suits you best:

Or the Reverso:

I went for the Reverso (I mean, it’s a classic and who doesn’t want two watches in one), but the Traditionelle is also on my wishlist still. I like how they both can be dressed up or down.

If you like the aesthetic, the automatic Cartier Tank Louis fits the bill.
