3710. This Nautilus has an amalgam of odd features that differentiates it from every other Nautilus; straight side case hinges, smooth black dial, Roman numeral indices, comet power reserve indicator. And it can be had for 1/3 the price of the other black dial Nautilus, the 3711. Chances of seeing on someone else's wrist: extremely low.

Agree.

Great all arounder. Perfectly balanced. Great complication.

Awesome.

5711/1a White dial..

5980/1a with a white dial has been a close second for me and something I would like to add one day.

A 5711/p with the traditional white dial would be my made up grail.

Do you think the RG is out of the question? I thought maybe a 1 year wait for a known customer? The 5740 I was told was a 9 month to 1.5 year wait last Summer on the Basel tour but looking at the resale now I imagine every whale is after one now so that is probably DOA.

I've had most of them (5711, 5712 steel and rose, 5980 steel, 5990 and both 5726 on strap and bracelet with different dial colors...and of course sold most long before the huge boom in pricing) and at the end of the day, it comes down to the 5712 steel for being a classic sporting watch that dresses up and down flawlessly that overall ends up being the "best" nautilus to me. The 5990 however is what id consider the best daily driver sport watch if that's the purpose it's meant to serve.

I lost my only Patek AD relationship recently. I've been told not to bother as a new client by a handful of ADs.

Very dynamic question IMO....and to each their own. But I started out 100% set on a 5711a in blue.....as that was the iconic look of the Nautilus. Was very fortunate to get the 5712a instead and that watch has grown on me BIG time. I am still on "the list" for the 5711a and the 5740g but I have to say.....I am not really all that eager for either after owning the 5712a. I really think 5712a has just the right amount of complication to keep it interesting and I actually far prefer the movement over the 5711a (that micro rotor 240 caliber.....absolutely stunning and timeless like my 3940p). While I still think the 5740g is a grail for me/top of the Nautilus food chain.....I have to say the 5712a might just be my favorite overall.

I think you're spot on. The 5711 to me was always somewhat clinical (pretty yes, but really basic), the 5740 is cool in the collection sense, but honestly the 5712 has the right balance of everything in that aspect, and looks every bit the part that a 5740 does aesthetically, and in some cases maybe even a hair more special with the moon phase placement to be honest...hard not to love the 5712...

The 5740 when it comes out in SS will be my favorite. Can’t wait to buy it. Hopefully this Basel!

5990. It’s not the most complicated, iconic, collectible or rarest, but as an all rounder with useful complications, it cannot be beaten. It’s the only Patek you ever need

Brilliantly put!!

The 5726 used to be my favourite but then I tried on the 5990 and 5712. It was clear immediately that the 5990 was the right watch for me and suited me perfectly, but the 5712 was so stunning that it had me in turmoil as sadly I couldn’t have them both. I eventually ordered the 5990 and have no regrets as the 5712 is too smart/classy for me.

The thing that always makes me smile a little on these types of threads is the owner bias, with people typically saying their favourite in the range is the one they own!

Of course, it makes sense it would be their favourite, after all, why would you buy a watch that wasn’t your favourite!! My favourite is the 5990, hence why I bought it.

But for all those who own the 5712 and say it’s their favourite (which I understand, it really is stunning), I wonder how many would really prefer the 5740?

Owner bias is one issue and makes sense. The other issue is that the simple question "Which one do you like best?" or "Which one is your favorite?" may not be specific enough when comparing watches with a factor 5 difference in MSRP and market price. Some people will just focus on looks completely disregarding price while others will get influenced by the economic implications when answering that same question.

My answers to the following three questions

1) Which one looks best?
2) Which one would I pick if I could get just one at MSRP?
3) Which one would I like to own if it miraculously fell from the sky?

would be very different...

1. 5726A
2. 5740G
3. 5711P 40th Anniversary

Would have flipped half of my collection for the 5711P 40th Anniversary if I was offered one at MSRP, but it would be unrealistic so it falls under the "miraculously fell from the sky" category.
A 5740G at MSRP is still possible (although the chances might be stacked against me)
For balance and date window I really enjoy the look of the 5726A, although it remains a close one versus the classic 5980A.

I own the 5712/1a. I would rather own it than the 5740/1g.

Without question, the 5740 is a marvel, but I prefer steel to gold. I also prefer the quirkinesses of the 5712 dial. And I prefer the additional hints of red on the 5712. And I also like that there is a moving seconds hand on the 5712 vs. no movement on the 5740 dial. And, for me, I am not fond of the font on the 5740 nor am I fond of the 3 subdials’ resemblance to Mickey Mouse. YMMV.

Now, if someone gave me one, I’d wear and enjoy it, but I would not spend $119k on it.

You took the words out of my mouth Steve. I would say the exact same. If I had a spare 119K, then I probably would.

Agree except for not owing a 5712 at this point as I went for the 5711 first. I find the 5712's asymmetric dial much more interesting and engaging than the 3 subdial PC layout in the 5740.
