Next Patek

Hello all,

I am thinking about my next Patek purchase and ibhave decided I want an annual calendar. I am between the 5205r or the 5146g.
Which of the two complement my Aquanaut 5167?

Thanks!
Dana

Hard to beat a 5205. Great watch.

5146g of the two options. I like the "softness" of that one vs. 5205r.

Interesting, I have yet to see. Having the 5170p took that itch away. I do think the 5205 wears wonderfully. Look at it here.....

Yeah, I loved it in photos but in person.... I dunno. It didn't speak to me and the blue was very hard to pull out unless the light was right, it's very dark. The gradient blue/black really didn't work for me.

Some may like the double circles connected by the hour indicators on the dial of the 5205, but I'm not a fan of it.

The 5146 wears slightly smaller than the 5205. Based on your photos, I think the 5146 looks better on your wrist.

Patek is really about complications, if you want sports buy a Rolex. Forget about the Aquanaut unless you just love it. Overpriced, if you cannot get at retail, and too hard to get.

All these photos of the 5205 and a great watch to be sure. But, how can you deal with the center axle coming straight up through the 24 dial covering the 11. 12 and 1. Who designs this stuff?

5146G is the timeless and classic Patek. Power reserve indicator is very useful on an AC. Plus it has decent lume.

5205 is less traditional and wears larger. It has a 24 hour indicator if that's important to you.

So its really 23, 24 and 1 since its a 24 hour wheel.

5146, although I really love the rg black dial 5205. As others have stated, the 5146 is just timeless.

I like the 5146 better, as I favor more classic watches but I'd personally go for yellow or rose gold.

Second this. Trying to decide between the yellow or rose gold 5146 right now.

Both are great watches, but I’ll go for the 5146 (IMHO it has the real Patek DNA)

I have to agree, I saw the 5205G-013 last week, and in person, the dial is very difficult to make out -it's almost black. It's still a stunning watch though

I’ve had both ACs with my 5167, so here’s my take. For me what made my mind up was down to how I dressed and legiblity. Initially I felt the 5205 was the one, it looks great in the flesh and has a real presence about it. However once I got it I always felt it looked out of place when I was really dressed down and here’s the clincher, it was not a particularly easy watch to read. So going from a watch like the 5167 (which you can read the time on across the room) I had a watch I had to angle to catch the light on occasion. I moved it on and got a 5146g with the slate grey dial. I have to say I love it, it’s as close to an”only” watch as I’ve come to. The dial is symmetrical, legible and as I’ve said before has genuine Patek DNA about it. It’s very reminiscent of a 2526. I also feel it wears better dressed down than the 5205. I appreciate the 5146 is a bit old school compared to the 5205 but I think an AC is an everyday wearer and if you’re not 100% happy don’t pull the trigger.

I think 5146G looks better on you.

I would personally go with the exact same 5146.

Dana - Congrats in advance on your next purchase.

Assuming the 5396 isn't an option, I'd go 5146, but I'd go either rose or yellow.

5167a and 5146r would be a really great PP pair!

Thanks! The 5396 just felt off on my wrist. It's not out of the contest but I'm leaning toward the 5146.

I agree, dressing the 5205 was a concern, I love the look but could I wear it in jeans? Not as easy as theb 5146...

The 5205 is one of my favourite ref for an AC Patek for me right now! I think the beauty of the watch can only be appreciated when you hold it up close and see how exquisite the watch is. The colour of that dial is crazy! The day date and month display via the apertures simply looks amazing! But, still buy whichever your heart fancies more! Both are beautiful pieces

I owned a 5205g in slate dial as my first Patek. It didn’t last long. To me, it’s a neither here nor there watch — can’t really dress down nor wear it formal perhaps due to the case shape and dial. Sad because I like it on the picture. In fact, it won in the battle against the 5726 leather.

I replaced it with the 5140g and was very happy. I think all roads will lead to a Perpetual Calendar Watch. I say save up and get the game ending watch. Lol!

This was another mental debate I had with myself. I think it would be hard to dress down. Sweater a jeans, fine. T shirt or polo? I thought that may be difficult.
