1962 5512 Submariner

Just had to share this little story..........I have not had a lot to get excited about over the last year,(in the watch world that is) but last weekend all that changed when I had a call from a lovely 78 year old fella who had heard about my watch passion and thought I might have been interested in his old Rolex Sub which he had owned from new, his wife had given it to him on their wedding day in 1964. She passed on a few years ago and he decided rather than have the family arguing over it when he goes, it would be better to cash it in now and share the proceeds equally amongst them. After getting prices from a couple of specialist vintage watch dealers here he then approached me with it and the price he wanted. I couldn't resist and didn't argue the price, too rare a watch to play games over and I am delighted. It needs a bit of a clean up and the glass could do with a polish, the original dial and hands are perfect and the 1530 movement is very clean and keeping great time. The bracelet is a bit rough but restorable. The date mark on the inner back cover is 111 62 and the serial # is 818*** Wow, I am floating and will try and get some better photo's when the sun comes up

Looks like a (metres first) gilt/rail dial. It's certainly been well used and that makes it all the more "alive". Time for a good, sympathetic service...

Congrats

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. I freed up the bezel which was set solid and I gave it a wash with a bit of tooth paste and it has cleaned it up quite nicely, I just need to get the glass and case lightly (professionally) polished to get the bigger marks out of it.

Well Phil original crystal, bezel insert & crown, it doesn't get any better than that.

Big congrats.

polished the glass

How's that, the before photo as purchased and then below the "after I polished the glass" photo, I think it looks a little better, just not sure how far to go with the case and bezel. A new bezel insert would stick out like the dogs proverbials and to find one of the same vintage with less ware is virtually impossible, I will give it some thought. That dial is just hypnotic. Anyone know a good way of filling the lume dot hole without it being too obvious ie not a brand new lume dot that glows like a beacon but some kind of coloured filling that would pass as an old faded dot. Any sugestions very much appreciated.

amazing watch. great find. looks much better after you cleaned it! it is always difficult when dealing with old items as to the best way to repair/look after them. i buy old run down buildings and turn them into something new, and along the way i have learned that the main thing is not to fake things. a new piece of wood, in an old beam is perfectly acceptable as a repair, so long as its done honestly and properly. the same could be applied to a watch. the best thing would be to find some vintage parts to put in (thrill of the chase) but that will take a long time (to hunt down the pieces). you should not be afraid to fit new pieces if you want to. great watch. good work fella
