Exp 39mm. I would have purchased it, but I needed date and also thought second time zone would be useful, went with GMTIIc. I still dream of the 39mm though.

I have a black sub as my daily and it's great with the ceramic bezel that is so scratch resistant.

If you do not need the date: explorer.
If you need the date (like me): submariner and pray when you cross a risky zone.

Tough choice though would swing towards Rolex every time. Explorer 1 is a very nice watch and whilst I know you mention wanting something low profile, the new Explorer 2 (with black dial), really hits that tool watch look!

more low profile, less bling and more "tool"? the tudor (doesn't have the crown or name, no polished bits, more capable "tool").

which is the better choice? personal decision. both are great. explorer for reasons other than what you seem to be looking for (but, among rolex models, it's pretty low profile).

Nothing more than an additional tidbit for him to consider. You have to read his profile- he doesn't like water very much so he needs a daily wear for field and concrete not a 42mm titanium diver..........especially (imo) a 4k one that contains an ETA movement- lovely snowflake hands not withstanding.

There was an interesting article in one of the Pelagos threads on here recently about how the author had decided the Pelagos was his one and only "go to". Great read, and while I don't personally agree with all of his subjective criteria, it's worth a look.
