1978 GMT Comments?

Hey Guys,

I am more of a modern guy however a friends uncle has offered to sell me his GMT. He texted me some pictures. First thing i notice is it looks like its been polished to hell.
Please take a look and let me know what you guys think?
Is it a mess or worth a pick up at a fair value? ( i am not asking for valuation I know this forum is not for that just an opinion if the watch would make a nice pickup or if its just too far gone)
Guy says he paid $600 in 1979 for it and is original owner. He does not have box or papers, watch only.

Photos are not good, but it doesn't look "polished to hell" to me - far from it.
Nice watch - if the price is right... why not?

Thats why I ask you guys, from some of the pics It looked like the case was polished quite a bit. I thought it would have sharper lines otherwise but i really dont know what an example of this year should look like.

Is there anything i should be looking for ?

the date wheel should have open 6's and 9's right ?

does the dial look original?

Also - is the crystal on GMT supposed to be that fat?

I agree with Karl. Looks like the polished lug tops is from clothing rub and is not uncommon on nice, original 40-year-old watches. The only issue I see is the replacement bracelet and bezel insert which aren't deal breakers.

I say...why not. Go for it.

Please, post some large, clear photos if you want some serious responses on the dial, case or any other aspect of the watch. I can't even tell what dial it has now based on that photo.
