The challenge of finding Dick’s watch was elusive but I did manage to speak with his widow and first wife (Pictured) who confirmed the tale. The watch has been safely stowed in the family bank vault and circumstances precluded a personal examination. It did not deter me from hunting down more known examples of the first gold Submariners ever produced.

I like the gold Sub and Daytona. They are so nice. I was lucky enough to wear a gold Daytona once and it's like wearing a gold brick on your wrist. Everyone who saw me eyes were immediately drawn to my wrist. It's a little to much attention for me.

I like them as well. This is a 18038 I picked up about 1 year ago. Took me a while to wear with confidence, but it became my daily timer now. Takes me back in time and caters to my nostalgic sentiment. Whenever I look at it, I think it's beautiful.
Contrarily to what we might expect, I also found it is less recognized by others. To them it might just look like some fake bling.

I love these. How stretch prone is the Presidential bracelet on the five digit Day Dates? I'd hate to buy one and have to replace the $$$ bracelet.

Unfortunately the shiny shine shine six digit models don't appeal to me at all.

As with any reference, it's all about finding the right one.

I found this A serial, 18238 Day-Date, was told it was a safe queen, still had the stickers on the caseback, and when I took it to get serviced, the technician said it was in astounding shape after quickly checking the movement and deciding if the crown needed replacing (it didn't :-))

Bracelet on mine is in perfect condition, zero stretch, and couldn't be happier with the watch.

Just have to take your time and be patient and hunt for the right one, eventually you'll find one.

^^^ that’s really nice. An A serial would have to be one of the later years of these. They went six digit really early.

Gold watches are awesome!!

Personally I prefer new Rolex models than the vintage ones but they both are special pieces.

I love those old Chronographe Suisse watches, they are available with all sorts of great dial varieties and when I first started to wear a vintage watch these were a great affordable way of getting a good sized, very attractive and obviously vintage watch onto my wrist. A lot of Landeron and Venus movements which are quite servicable.

The gold cased ones have a reputation for having very thin gold cases and hollow lugs and are known as ´onion skin cases´. Some have heavier gold cases than others.

For some reason they have not really risen with the rest of the market and so today represent good value as an affordable inroad into vintage if one is not too brand conscious as they can be found starting at a couple hundred euros.

It´s hard to tell from the one picture posted but they look to have interesting dial variations and be in good shape so he shouldn´t have a problem finding new owners for them.

Here´s mine which was my first vintage chrono, my first vintage watch in 18kt rose and also my first watch to be stopped and taxed by our friends at customs and excise :(
