I understand where the OP is coming from for sure. And I definitely understand the thinking behind the simplicity of only having one watch to wear so you never have to think about which watch to put on.
Personally, I like the two watch theory; one expensive dressy watch and one casual watch. I have a BLNR which I wear everyday to work and when I go out for the evening or to a special event. Then I have a Speedy Reduced which I wear all other times. It’s nice to be able to switch things up for a change and it’s also nice to have another watch to wear when it may not be the best situation for a Rolex. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I was striving to be a one watch guy for a while. Flipped more than one, but would only own one watch at a time. Then after I flipped my BLNR, and was on the hunt for my next one and only (a ceramic Daytona), I came to a realization. For the price of a Daytona at retail, I could get two great watches: a Milgauss and a Speedy Pro. That's where I am at this point, and I feel like I'm in the sweet spot at 2 watches. The Milgauss is my daily, and the Speedy is my Tuesday, and one or two other days out of the week, watch. I find that it is a really great balance, and even at 3 watches I feel like I would have trouble deciding what to wear/giving them all enough wrist time.
Btw, the Explorer is probably the perfect one and only watch. (Not a fan of date windows.) |

I like the explorer as it does not have a date, I believe that would spoil the symmetry of the dial.

I tried to have 1 watch but no matter what Rolex it is, you still need variety as boredom will set in. I think 2 would work, one workhorse, one dressy or another SS that looks great with leathers/natos.

Sounds to me that if you liquidated your collection and picked up a new Explorer you'd have plenty left over to take a fantastic vacation and wear it!!! Don't forget to take lots of pics and share it. The Explorer is a beautiful, clean, elegant, no nonsense piece!!

No but I often ruminate which 3 would be my ideal collection. In that scenario an Explorer I or II would fit in (together with DD and SD perhaps).

I do think we enjoy the thrill and anticipation of the hunt, though. |

I’m currently trying to sell a few pieces to fund the new OP in black dial and 34mm to go as my daily. I’d keep a couple of classics in the safe for occasional wear, but would love to go 1-watch for a while.

Looking back, I got my first so-called luxury watch 5 years ago. A Rolex Sub Date Ceramic. Since then I bought and flipped the following in past 2 years;
1. JLC Master Compressor Chrono 2 2. Rolex Sea Dweller Ceramic 116600 3. AP 15710ST Diver White 4. Rolex Deepsea 116660LN 5. Rolex Sub Date Hulk 116610LV 6. Rolex Daytona 116503 7. Rolex Sub Date 116610LN (again) 8. Rolex Sub ND 114060 9. Black Bay Black 10. Sinn U1 11. Rolex GMT Master II 116713LN 12. AP 15400ST Silver 13. Rolex Sea Dweller 16600 14. Rolex Sky Dweller 326933 15. AP 25721TI Offshore Titan 16. AP 26400ST Offshore 44mm Panda 17. Rolex Explorer II 16570 Polar 18. Rolex Explorer II 216570 Polar Looking back, it’s quite silly but I’m lucky I don’t lose money (instead making quite a sum). At the moment only keeping watch #16, #17 and #18. If I have to choose 1, it will be either #17 or #18... |
