One of the sales people at Tourneau in downtown SF told me that being in a big city and one that’s a huge tourist destination = exactly what you said. Slightly more supply but much higher demand.

I overheard him talking to visitors from overseas and telling them he couldn’t put them on a list (I didn’t catch the model save that it was a stainless sports reference) and that their best strategy would be to establish a relationship with a local ad or to call and be willing to travel to an ad not on the u.s. coasts or in a big city.

And while I’ve done my share of criticizing Tourneau, this guy was a total watch geek who knew his stuff. We had a great conversation.

Congratulations on you first Rolex, great choice

Since you’re only a 5 minute walk to your AD, I’m sure we’ll see more incomings

From reading the forums, I thought that ADs didn't know what was coming in shipments.

Great watch, congratulations.

Q. Why are steel sports Rolex watches becoming more scarce at dealers?

A. Because Rolex is not increasing production and more watches are being sold in countries such as China.

It is not as if this is any great mystery.

Q. How can Rolex increase the availability of the most desirable watches?

A. By raising the price to meet the market.

No great mystery here either, the price of goods is determined by supply and demand. If you try to break that rule you will end up with an artificial market. If the price is too high no one will buy the product. If the price is too low the products will be snapped up by middle men, (gray dealers) and then sold for what they are actually worth.

Rolex seems to be playing the long game, whereas lot of other manufacturers have screwed themselves and priced themselves out of the market and have either accepted their fate or had to lower their prices (which imo should never be done for a luxury item).

What a beauty. I know what you mean when you say you felt like a kid again when you got your Sub. I recently purchased my first Rolex, a new model Explorer, and I felt the same way. Went into to the AD, purchased my watch and wore it out of the store. Absolutely love it and am reading everything I can about Rolex. The watches are simply amazing. Mark

Wow - thanks everyone for the great comments - I’m definitely feeling the love! I can’t seem to stop looking at it and it won’t be easy to take it off to go to sleep. But, tomorrow’s another (Sub wearing) day!!

Congrats!

BTW, AD is likely busy selling watches out the back door to grey dealers. The 'for sale' section is always full of brand new watches with stickers removed...
