New arrival - Red 1680 Sub

First of all, many thanks to Mo (@swaini3), Robby (@southtexas), and Aaron (@swish77) for helping vet this when it became available. Since I tend to be more drawn to the no-date Sub references, I hadn't paid enough attention to the 1680, and was trying to learn a lot quickly. This was purchased as part of a lot from an estate; the buyer was mainly interested in one watch and was selling off the rest to recoup his investment.

No bracelet, unfortunately, but a nice Mk4 dial with aged waffle-texture lume and matching hands. The insert has a bit of fade, and fortunately I have been hanging on to an extra lume pip. The case is thick with strong crown guards; chamfers are present, but worn. Overall, I'm really happy with it, I love the color of the lume. I may put it on a 7206 for now, but obviously it needs a service.

The 2.36M serial lines up with the III.69 case-back, but is early for a Mk4 dial according to the conventional list on the DRSD site. The list hasn't been updated in a long time, so I tried to do some research myself and Mo also found several examples. For some reason, it's not easy to find many 2.3M Red Subs on the web (compared to both earlier and later serials), but I did unearth several 2.35M – 2.38M Mk4 examples, so I'm keeping an open mind at this point.

Stunner. I vote unpolished (and dial is original to case). Congrats again.

Congrats!
I don’t know why anyone would still choose modern over vintage when vintage has so much more personality and history.
Enjoy it with a 7206 for a while as it will look great IMO.
Please post pics if you do install one.

Super. Love those MK IV features - open sixes on the depth rating and red printing on a white base.

I assume you'll be cleaning the DNA out of that gasket channel quick smart.

Great choice.
Appreciation is in the eye of the beholder.
It definitely has impeccable character, and qualities that is no longer made today.

Congrats. Great example.

Are you on the hunt for a period correct bracelet or are you gonna use straps?

Amazing pick up!
This thread is on one that I now regret not getting, it was a 2.29M serial.

Huge congrats, Dan! Looks like a fabulous example, and that case! So nice.

I wouldn't worry about the serial-number range for an MK4. It's really close to begin with and the DRSD list is an approximation anyway. When you look at the watch as a whole, it has a raw, original feel to it. I can't imagine that the dial didn't leave the factory in that case.

Looks v good Dan, nice waffling, orig crown, date wheel, handset and I think plexi is the original soft edge chamfer one too - all things I like.

Keep an eye on the l/h side edge of the 6 HR marker over time, tiniest bit of discolouration/ trit-rot just starting to appear perhaps...I have a Red and a DRSD that are both similar (mine are worse frankly) and both have seemed to get a tiny bit worse every 5 years when comparing photos yr to year, but no biggie. Nothing you can do about it other than keeping it dry/humidity free if one can.

Nice piece indeed though, congrats :-).

It looks amazing, just needs the bracelet or a nice brown aged strap.

Many thanks everyone for the comments. Sorry, not a great photo, but here is the watch on a 7206, which is certainly from the same period. I think it looks pretty good.

@alwayshere, it was sold by someone who actively seeks out and buys watches, mostly local to him. He flips a lot of them, but you wouldn't know his name and I wouldn't call him a dealer.
