SD vs EXP-II

Hi to all,

as per my previous posts, I wanted to ask you about my next Rolex purchase.

I narrowed down my choices between the SD and the EXP-II, because of their ruggeness, and ability to follow me everywhere, which means snorkeling ( not diving ), traveling, hiking, cycling, skiing and so on...

I went today to a Rolex AD in Dubai and tried both the SD and the EXP-II. they were listed at respectively 20,000 AED and 18,000 AED ( approx. 5445 and 4900 USD ), they give straight away a 10% discount on top of that.

I think I will go for the EXP-II, mainly because it has more functions to it, and waterproof enough for my water activities.

The SD is great but just overengineered for my needs.
Also I have a Submariner already, and the SD wouldn't bring much more, apart from the date...

Size wise, I have to say that with my less than 6.5" wrist the SD would be hard to wear on its original oyster bracelet. My SUB with a similar bracelet ( but non-SEL ) wears just fine, but the extra backcase height of the SD makes it too high for me.

The EXP-II of course sits perfect, as does my GMT-II, using the exact same case and bracelet, without diving extension. The oyster with lock and no extension is definitely the most confortable...

I love the steel fixed bezel of the EXP-II, and it looks actually much stronger than the GMT-II rotating bezel, which I lost once already, with a not-so-big bump...

I only tried the black dial EXP-II, I have to say that although the white dial looks gorgeous, I tend to like the black better.
Now I have already the black dial SUB and black dial GMT-II, so a white dial would complement the collection well, and give some more difference compared to the GMT-II. We'll see when the hunt starts.
My collection will have then the reference in sea, land and air sport Rolex.

I definitely want to find a nice used drilled hole case EXP-II, because it is so easy to change/remove the bracelet to clean it. It adds to the sturdiness of this watch.

I thank you all for the pictures on the previous posts, helped me a lot for chosing, and now the hunt can start, hopefully before the end of 2007, I will have my 3rd Rolex ( 4th if I count my already sold GMT16750 ).

I will keep you informed.

Cheers / Pierre

If you already own a Sub, getting the SD would not be much difference aside from the size and the HEV. Personally, in this case I would go with the EXP-II! I like having the 4th hand and the date with cyclops is standard on the EXP-II. Are you looking at the white or black dial?? I only have the EXP-II and chose the white dial due to the reason that I would one day purchase either a Sub or the new GMT-II and it would already have a black dial. Just my $.02! I hope you enjoy what ever you get!

The choice is quite obvious based on your current collection. Go for the white face EXP 2 as it complement the collection best. Good choice for going for a used watch with tritium dial and drill holes. All the best in your final decision and happy hunting!

Icon5 White or Black

White or Black i don't know.

I will see what I can find, but yes, a white could be more intresting, having already the black GMT-II and SUB.

Go for the WHITE faced Explorer II to get something very different from the SD, Sub + GMT II (different also since the Expl. II has a FIXED steel bezel)

Yes, yes,yes.....the white is interesting...

But you say you want to snorkel with it .....The black face has the same visibility underwater as the Sub and the SD.

The white face is harder to see in less than the best water conditions.......

Go for the WHITE Exp-II. Probably the only affordable WHITE dial sports Rolex out there.

It sounds just from your post that you've pretty much made that decision! You've already got a diver, and if the SD has the potential of already being too large or uncomfortable with the Oysterlock, then I'd say the answer is simple....Ex-II all the way!

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be Land, Air, and Sea

I thought the Daytona represents the "Land" part?

I would say that the Daytona represents the "road" or "speed" part.

Well that is a good point, but if I go snorkeling, I will only need the time to tell the time, and nothing else implying safety for decompression timing etc...
So that is not a big deal...

Let's say that the Daytona is the civilised land watch, and the EXP-II the uncivilised land watch....

Well guys,

thanks a lot, I appreciate your concerns about my next purchase.

It seems that you all prefer the white face EXP-II, so I may take direction...It's amazing how a bunch of guys that I hardly know can influence me on a 4000 US$ purchase

Well I have to say that for an adventure oriented watch, the black hands and markers make sense, whitout any bling.
Now the white face may be pretty hard to read in some conditions, still I have to say it's pretty unique among the watch production, all included, and especially for a Rolex.

Well I may go for the whity EXP-II, if I can find a nice example.

Cheers / Pierre
