What RWT said. This is a correct OCC dial. Gilt dials did in some cases turn matte, depending on how the varnish on the top surface aged (even with no water damage or exposure). Additionally, some batches of radium lume were quite green - and slightly irregularly shaped. Note both the color, and the shape of the lume on the baton markers in this screen grab of a 6538 in Goldfinger, which was potentially produced around the same time period as the 6542 GMT-Master

I just watched the video and it really is quite touching; would have loved to have made such a purchase myself.

I think RWT was also questioning the correctness of the dial. It doesn't look right to me but I haven't viewed the video.

its all relative to the timeframe.. those papers are so rare, had the chronometer results, everything..

todays b&p is a card and box.. probably wont bring 25k extra ever..

my 2 cents though only..

Watching the video I noticed an interesting text on the Rolex box "Use this box for cigarettes"

I'll bet at auction that full set would be near 100k retail.

I think it would need an untouched original dial to approach that figure.

If it's not refinished and all serials match up, surely it's worth a lot more than quoted, $100k plus to a determined buyer. So has it appeared at any auctions yet ? It would be amazing to think he actually kept it and passed it down to a grandson. It would also be interesting to see how much it would be worth in another 50 years time. (but i won't be here, probably..MEH! )

This one truly never gets old.

Combine a truly, remarkable watch with a genuinely humble and fortunate gentleman and you have a heartwarming story every time.

never seen that before - thanks

what the heck is that worth at auction now?

if ever a watch deserved the phrase - "go find another one like that!"
