Icon5 Submariner with new movement

Hi TRF members,

Sorry for newb question. While I got a call from local AD that 114060 model is available, I just came up with one question. As I heard that Sub will get new movement, (just read from TRF) do you guys think it's better/worth waiting until Sub with new movement releases? (Which I assume it will be 2021?)

Thank you. Any advice will be very appreciated.

Why wait is the question you gotta ask yourself. The submariner with any newer movement isn’t going to be more reliable or mechanically “better” in any real way at all. If you want the 114060 go for it now if anything if movement changes the outgoing model will become more desirable most likely.

The one thing I've learnt with waiting is that you end up missing out altogether. Plus whose to say this new movement is better. Only time will tell.

Wouldn’t care about the movement so much vs the anticipated design changes... specifically addressing the lug width.

There's nothing wrong with the current movement and about the only advantage to the new movement is the increased reserve, which to me is no advantage at all.

Go for it while you have the chance.

I have been asking myself this as well in case I get a call but ultimately I think I would go for it.

Anything you read on TRF regarding Basel releases is pure speculation and guessing, likely based off what has been done in the past. I wouldn't consider it fact, or never less make your decision whether to buy or not from it.

With still a few problems with the 32 series movement I would take the 31 over the 32 at this present time. Some say the extra power-reserve is a advantage but reading many of posts on forum, expect many of the 32 series watches sold to date end on one of these machine winders so no real advantage.

Wait and see. The no date sub isn’t hard to get, and prices aren’t going to increase anytime soon.

It may or may not be in 2021. How long do you want to wait for a watch? Members here have been speculating about everything regarding the Sub for years now to no avail. I would take the time proven 3135 movement over the new 32xx which has had it's share of "bugs" to be worked out. A 70 hour power reserve is hardly a reason to play the waiting game for a new Sub.

I got the later DJ41 with the crown at the 6 o'clock and so far no problems at all. Keeps great time within spec's. I think the earlier models with the 30 at the 6 o'clock where the one having some problems when the 3235 came out. Just my .02..

The movement is one thing, but what you need to ask yourself is if you can live with having a soap bar for a watch, with the 114060.

If you can handle that, then get it. Else, you'll have to wait for the next model

Not sure why the hate for the maxi case. It really.grows in you and feels more solid.

I'd be very surprised if it goes back to the slim lugs. New GMTs would have been released the same if that was the case. Rolex moves forwards, not backward.

Current model is beautiful and the bugs are worked out already.
Extra power reserve is nice, but really, who cares about it... If the watch is dead when you pick it up, just spend the extra 30 seconds winding it and setting it.

Pick it up amigo and enjoy it!

I agree that the new Sub will probably not see much change on the lugs, because they will probably keep the same case as the new GMT's. However, the fact that the new Datejust 36 has slimmer lugs tells me anything is possible. Either way, I'm just curious to see what happens

Just go for it. Any changes are pure speculation and IMO its hard to improve on the current Sub.

New movement (if there is one) likely has 70 hr power reserve. Big deal. As another member posted above, you wait and likely lose out altogether. Buy it if it sings to you. Wait if you’re really not in love.

I'll always welcome somethung new and different. A colour option would be amazing. What was the different on the datejust lug width, have never noticed.

With a deep appreciation for the profile of the 5 digit references, the maxi case just doesn’t work for me, If the new sub were to adopt the new gmt lugs, that would be a meaningful improvement.

I would wait. The new Sub will most probably have a 70 hour power reserve. That’s a big deal compared to 48 hours.

At this point, better one bird in the hand. If the new Sub is announced at BW2021, how long before it's manufactured and before your AD calls you? How high will it be priced in the grey market if you don't want to wait? We don't even know when Rolex will reopen. Too many uncertainties.

The 3235 is nice but is it really so much nicer than the 3135? Honestly, I can't tell the difference. If you rotate several watches, between 2 and 3 days power reserve doesn't really matter as they all stop. If you wear it daily, it matters even less.

Get the 114060 now I say. Enjoy the heck out of it from now on.

I would go for it now. Who knows what supply will be like the rest of this year and the new releases will be impossible to get for a while when they finally come out.

while I would want a Syloxi hairspring 060, i would also not wait to get a Submariner if you have the opportunity for new at MSRP. These are fantastic watches as is and you can always get the new one later. Besides, the Maxi case is awesome.

The 70 hour power reserve comes in handy for when you leave the watch in a Friday after work and pick it up again on Monday morning.

That said, I've used it once.

You must be kidding, that's like o.1 mm difference...

Daytona, the new DJ 36 and previous + current 6 digit DD 36 are the true successors in a modern implementation of the slim profile that Rolex used like forever.

To each their own.

I just dont see a marked difference between the 6 digit supercase designs.
