So what is the real value of the watch now?

A whole heck of a lot of money less--that is not the issue though. The issue is the watch in the pictures is definitely a Big Crown -look at how many ticks on the bezel the crown covers. None of the people bidding would bid up a 5510 big crown in not that great of shape. They all were bidding on watch in picture-a single owner 6538 from original owner!!

The best way to put an end to the speculation would be for him to post a new photo of the back. The model # will be stamped into the case between the lugs in the 12 o'clock position, right?

Then we should expect to see bid retractions.

In the end--I guess I will believe it when I see it. Could it be a 5510 big crown?? That would make it a rare breed.
I hope it turns out in the end to be a good story and look forward to seeing the outcome.
PS--I just spoke with one of our TRFers and the 5512 is worth more than a 6538 in Big Crown--so I truly hope it has a good ending
for both parties--buyer and seller!!

I kinda believed this guy/is real, until he posted that last little blurb about himself, and his residency and his practice so I did a little digging and I came up with this (there are not going to be a bunch of neurosurgeons with the first name of Robert, close to his age, who were licensed in Texas, working in Waco), which doesn't quite jive with what he said about himself, but if this is him, it could explain "the scam" if this is even a scam.....a need for money!! Looks like THIS fellow below, if he is the seller, had some serious practice/malpractice issues which resulted in his having to give up his license. The DOB of 1932 gets him close to 80..... I guess we will find out more when the auction is over.

I kinda hope it is all on the up and up too, Connor!

I am not sure what to make of it now. One of our forum experts- told me that a 5510 Big Crown is 3 times rarer than a 6538. It just seems awful strange and I look forward to the conclusion and hope that it it true. I also hope that the buyer takes a lot of precautions which I am sure they will. Time will tell!! In this case expensvie time!!

the more I look at this auction the more red flags I am seeing...

first, he says it's signed "5510", but several "experts" claim it's a "big crown" 6538...

second, if he didn't think the watch was valuable and he says "I thought I might sell it and get $50 or $100 for it", then why does he finish his initial description with "So here's your chance to pick up a rare iconic timepiece" ??? rare and iconic does not translate to a $50 or $100 sale...

something is not measuring up here... just my $0.02

but like all of you, I can't wait to see how much some poor SOB shells out for it

cheers,
Peter

Im not a doctor, but you would think BOB the surgeon would be able to write correctly. This came from his AD on Ebay. "The crystal bears some obvious scratches." BEARS like the animal or team. RED FLAG for me. Of course if i'm wrong, then whatever....

Umm the word Bear as a verb can also mean:
to possess, as a quality or characteristic; have in or on: to bear traces; to bear an inscription.

So i'm pretty sure his use of bears in that case is correct... unless this post is a joke lol

You are, in fact, wrong.
I hate to be the "bearer" of bad news, but that is absolutely the correct use of the word BEAR.

Take a look at the answers to his questions and then tell me what you think......I am going back to my original hunch.

You mean to this?

"Because it is a 6538 Big Crown with an amazing dial--an original owner example to boot! Nice examples sell for well north of $100k with original dial and hands-which this clearly has! "

Just my sixth sense--I would be very cautious about buying a 6 figure watch like a Big Crown on Ebay from a non known entity with little feedback. The watch certainly looks legit and the dial is amazing from the photos--but as you always hear on the forum--"Buy the seller". Someone above said they were appalled by questions--I am more surprised by the answers.......
No-that was not a hunch but an answer to the OP's original question-- I mean to this(above). By the way later on he disclosed it is a 5510 Big Crown-which is rarer than a 6538. It is amazing how an 80 plus year old guy who thought it wa worth 75 to 100 dollars took the bracelet off and read the numbers--not that it is too hard to do so but not something a novice with no clue would do. The answers to his questions l;ook awful fishy to me. I truly hope no one gets burnt--in the end--I hope it is legit--that wouldmake it a great story--I just don't buy it==hope I am wrong!
